He was spelled after a third behind the smart Repossession, who went on to claim his next two starts, including a Listed victory. That performance reinforced Kay Tee Why’s ability to measure up in quality company.

Given his profile and the placement here, he appeals as a strong winning proposition fresh.

Belmont Value Bet - Race 6 No. 6 Centre Bond

Centre Bond finally broke through third-up earlier this month, and while the opposition wasn’t strong, it was the confidence boost he needed. The extra furlong looks ideal now, and he drops 2kg from that win.

The son of Bondi has always hinted at ability but has often teased without quite putting it together. Even so, he has built a consistent record and rarely produces a poor run.

He is effective on both good and soft ground, so conditions shouldn’t pose a problem. With fitness on his side and some momentum behind him, he shapes as a value chance to go back-to-back.

This is a step up, but one that looks well within reach at his best.

Belmont Next Best Bet - Race 7 No. 7 Doctor Jay

Doctor Jay returned from a year on the sidelines with a plain effort on July 30, but that was understandable after such a long break. He has improved sharply since, working back to form across two subsequent runs.

His most recent performance on August 30 was a stylish victory, showing he has retained the talent that once had him highly regarded. That run confirmed his fitness is now where it needs to be.

He was scratched from last weekend, and while 1650m is an unknown, it’s worth a try. Importantly, his latest win was franked by Eccentric Nature, who came out and scored in this grade last week.

With the benefit of fitness and confidence, Doctor Jay can continue to progress and prove hard to beat.

Belmont Roughie - Race 8 No. 12 Costazita

Costazita has been lightly raced for his age but has always shown glimpses of ability. He’s returned with two solid runs over 1000m and should strip fitter stepping up to a more suitable 1200m.

Both of his career wins have come at this distance, and the rise in trip looks a clear positive after building fitness at shorter journeys.

His only real failure came on a Heavy 9 track in June, so the likelihood of a drying surface is a major tick. He has otherwise been honest whenever asked.

At a double-figure quote, he’s capable of running a cheeky race and adds interest for those looking outside the favourites.
