2025 Australia Stakes Best Bet - Southport Tycoon
He's not as effective when racing in the clockwise direction, which was evident via his four Sydney appearances last year, where his only top three finish came via the Sydney Stakes and he was still well held in that event.
Aside from an end of first prep ninth in the 2023 Caulfield Guineas, Southport Tycoon's has only been out of the top two once in Victoria and that was a fourth in last year's Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes.
The Ciaron Maher-trained entire saluted over this track/trip in September when taking out a much stronger race (Manikato Stakes) and on resumption last year, he was runner-up behind Veight in the Australia Stakes.
Southport Tycoon will need the breaks, having drawn gate two for Friday's fresh assignment and with even luck under Mark Zahra, he's clearly the one to beat as the class runner under WFA conditions.
2025 Australia Stakes Value Bet - Poison Chalice
Six furlongs could be on the short side for him, however, 1400m-1600m might prove to be the sweet spot for Poison Chalice, who was luckless in The Ingham on December 14 before a freshen-up.
Two starts back, the son of Savabeel had every chance in the Listed Ballarat Cup, where he was well backed late and perhaps the five-year-old is too brilliant to run a strong 2000m.
Poison Chalice opened his campaign with a brilliant fresh victory at Caulfield and despite lookin up against it on ratings under set weights and penalties, he arguably should've won the Crystal Mile here second-up.
While the five-year-old has completed 17 starts, there's still upside with a galloper who took a lot of time to mature and of those at double figure quotes, he's the one with X-factor who could finish top three/four without surprising.
