The 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix promises intense action as the F1 championship heads into the summer break. After a strong win at Spa, Kimi Antonelli remains the favorite, especially with Mercedes poised for a technical advantage on the tight Hungaroring circuit. Ferrari's improved performance and Lewis Hamilton's impressive Hungary record set the stage for a close fight, with McLaren’s new upgrades possibly shaking up the order. Expect Antonelli to claim both pole and victory, with Hamilton and Norris close behind.

Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix Preview & Predictions

Kimi Antonelli heads into Formula 1's summer break favourite after returning to winning form at Spa, but the Hungaroring presents Ferrari with their best opportunity yet to halt Mercedes' championship charge.

Round 11 of the 2026 Formula 1 season takes the grid from the high-speed challenge of Spa-Francorchamps to the tight, technical Hungaroring, often described as "Monaco without the walls."

The final race before the summer shutdown has regularly produced season-defining moments, and with Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull all bringing important developments, Budapest could reshape the championship heading into August.

Antonelli restored control of the title fight with his sixth victory of the season in Belgium, extending his lead after George Russell retired on the opening lap. Ferrari continue to close the gap, however, with Charles Leclerc finishing second at Spa after victories in two of the previous three races, while Lewis Hamilton arrives at his most successful circuit on the Formula 1 calendar.

Add Aston Martin's long-awaited upgrade package and Racing Bulls' promising new specification, and there are storylines throughout the field.

Unlike Spa, energy management won't dominate the conversation. The Hungaroring rewards mechanical grip, braking stability and traction, with teams expected to run Monaco-like levels of downforce around the 4.381km circuit.

Qualifying is traditionally one of the most important sessions of the year, making Saturday potentially as significant as Sunday's race.

Key Stats

  • Kimi Antonelli leads the Drivers' Championship after securing his sixth win of the 2026 season at Spa.
  • The Hungaroring is a 4.381km circuit with 70 laps making up the Grand Prix.
  • Lewis Hamilton is the most successful driver in Hungarian Grand Prix history with eight victories.
  • Pirelli will supply the C3 Hard, C4 Medium and C5 Soft compounds for the weekend.

Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix Qualifying Tips

Pole position could prove decisive around the Hungaroring, where overtaking remains among the most difficult on the Formula 1 calendar. Kimi Antonelli has been exceptional over one lap throughout 2026 and Mercedes should enjoy the switch from Spa's energy-sensitive layout to Budapest's technical corners. Ferrari will again challenge strongly, but Antonelli's qualifying form gives him a slight advantage heading into Saturday afternoon.

Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix Race Tips

Mercedes remain the benchmark entering the final race before the summer break. Antonelli demonstrated in Belgium that he can win even when strategy and circumstances work against him, recovering twice to reclaim victory from Charles Leclerc. Budapest should also minimise some of the reliability concerns Mercedes experienced at Spa by placing less emphasis on energy deployment.

Ferrari, however, may be even more dangerous than they were in Belgium. The SF-26 has shown genuine gains in mechanical grip and cornering performance, characteristics that should translate perfectly to the Hungaroring. Lewis Hamilton's extraordinary record in Hungary also cannot be ignored, while Leclerc continues to build confidence after his recent victory at Silverstone.

McLaren could quietly emerge as the biggest improver. New braking and cornering updates debut this weekend, and the Hungaroring provides an ideal circuit to judge their effectiveness. Lando Norris showed impressive race pace at Spa despite a grid penalty, while Oscar Piastri's result was compromised by floor damage rather than outright speed.

Predicted Top Five

  1. Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes)
  2. Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari)
  3. Lando Norris (McLaren)
  4. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari)
  5. Max Verstappen (Red Bull)

Verdict

It will be another weekend for Kimi Antonelli taking pole and the race win. Lewis Hamilton will be in the mix and will secure another podium.
