Australia is set to face Ireland in their opening match of the 2026 T20 World Cup. Despite recent poor form in T20Is, having lost to Pakistan and India, Australia is expected to pull out a victory against Ireland. Key players such as Cameron Green and Adam Zampa are expected to shine, aiming to set a solid run total or chase. Ireland, who showed resilience against Sri Lanka, will likely put up a competitive fight but may still fall short.

Australia vs Ireland 2026 T20 World Cup Tips - Expert Preview

The Aussies will shake off the cobwebs and get a victory over the Irish in their opener, however, it won’t be without its struggles.

Australia haven’t won a T20 match in their last 6 games going down 3-0 to Pakistan and also losing their series to India 2-1 in the beginning of the summer. There is pressure on the Aussies and that will take its toll without them paying the ultimate price of a loss.

The Irish put up a fight against the home side Sri Lanka and they will do enough to stay in this match against Australia as well. The run on the Colombo pitch will do them a world of good, while the Aussies will take some time finding their fire.

It will come though and likely from Cameron Green with the bat. The number 3 was the only light in a poor series against Pakistan and they will need his form to steady the ship and ensure that they put up the required run total or chase.

T20 World Cups bring the best out of spinner Adam Zampa and with the pitch in good shape for the legbreak turn expect Zampa to get off to good start as he looks to find the form he had in the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Windies.

  • Australia lost both T20I matches against Sri Lanka in Colombo in 2025
  • Cam Green averaged 31 runs in the three matches against Pakistan
  • Adam Zampa took 23 wickets at the 2024 T20 World Cup
  • Ireland had an opening partnership of 24 in their opening match vs Sri Lanka

Australia Form

Australia come into this World Cup in some ordinary T20 form, suffering two of their three biggest ever losses in the short form, both against Pakistan in their lead-up series to the tournament and after going down to India 2-1 in their series on home soil in the spring.

Nothing worked for Australia in Lahore against the host losing the final two matches by a record breaking 90 runs and 111 runs. Australia’s highest total in the series was 146 runs, which was in the first match of the series. Pakistan proved that it wasn’t the pitch scoring 198 in the second game followed by 207 in the third.

The bowling attack of Australia is under heavy questions without Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, relying on Josh Hazlewood to lead the next wave of quicks and Adam Zampa & Matthew Kuhnemann taking charge of the spin attack along with the all-rounders.

There is still plenty of depth with the bat, however, Steve Smith’s exclusion from the T20 squad for the World Cup will come under fire if the top order falls.

Ireland Form

Ireland put up a good fight in their opening match of the T20 World Cup in Colombo, eventually going down by 20 runs to Sri Lanka.

The Irish did well to keep the home side to 164 runs at  chasable 8.53 runs per over with both Barry McCarthy and George Dockrell claiming a couple of wickets each. However it proved to be too many for the Irish run down despite being in a winnable position with 5 overs remaining before the loss of top scorer Harry Tector (40 runs) fell.

With runs needed the wickets then began to fall fast handing Sri Lanka victory with 1 ball to spare

“To be honest, felt they got 15-20 too many. At the start of the day, we would have been happy chasing it. But you could find 20 runs almost anywhere in the match,” explained Irish captain Paul Sterling.

“When the match was on the line, we were not as clinical. A bit sloppy in the field. Experience told today. At the end, it was the difference (between us and them).”

Paul Stirling (c), Mark Adair, Ross Adair, Ben Calitz, Curtis Campher, Gareth Delany, George Dockrell, Matthew Humphreys, Josh Little, Barry McCarthy, Harry Tector, Tim Tector, Lorcan Tucker, Ben White, Craig Young
