St Kilda can break a bit of a drought when they take on Melbourne in AFL Round 20.

The two sides are out of finals calculations and are playing for pride. The Saints come off a 31 point loss against Geelong and have now lost six in a row. They sit in 15th spot on the ladder with a 5-13 win-loss record.

Melbourne are in 13th spot, one win ahead of St Kilda at 6-12. The Demons went down to Carlton last weekend by 10 points.

Despite both teams struggling for consistency, St Kilda’s win over Melbourne earlier this season — a 28-point result in Alice Springs — provides a blueprint for them to repeat the dose.

They’ve been competitive in losses, and Jack Sinclair continues to be a beacon of class and composure, coming off a 33-disposal performance. He’s hit the 25+ mark in five of his last six and has a strong record against the Dees.

Meanwhile, for Melbourne, Max Gawn remains dominant in the ruck — the Dees are top two in hitouts and hitout-to-advantage differential, while St Kilda are last. The big fella will have an influence and had 22 disposals the last time the two sides met.

The other one to look at in this match is the total points over. Both sides aren't really renowned for high scoring but there won’t be huge amounts of pressure in this match and five of St Kilda’s last six matches have gone over the total points. Provided the Demons can actually kick straight, that looks right in play.

  • St Kilda were 28-point winners the last time the two sides met.
  • Five of St Kilda’s last six matches have gone over the total points
  • Jack Sinclair has averaged 29 disposals from their past four matches against the Demons
  • Max Gawn will be influential against a Saints lineup that rank last for hitouts

Head to Head

The two sides met in Alice Springs back in Round 12 this season with St Kilda getting the job done by 28-points against an inaccurate Melbourne that had more scoring shots in the 7.21 to 14.7 scoreline.

Melbourne took out the previous five matches between the two sides. Two of those were at Marvel Stadium. St Kilda’s Jack Steele and Jack Sinclair have averaged 29 disposals from their past four matches against the Demons, while Melbourne’s Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver have gone a tick over 25. Petracca has kicked eight goals from his past four matches against the Saints.

St Kilda have lost nine of their past 10 matches. Eight of those nine losses have been decided by 39.5 points or less. St Kilda have won one of their past eight at Marvel Stadium and are 3-7 at the venue this season.

They have been able to match sides in terms of winning the footy, ranking in the top half for disposals and clearances but a lack of pressure has led to them ranking 14th for both inside 50s and fewest inside 50s conceded.

Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera has been a standout player this season and racked up 36 disposals against Geelong, while Jack Sinclair had 33. Wanganeen-Milera has had 30+ disposals in five of his past eight matches, while he had 28 and 29 in a couple of others.

Melbourne have lost six of their past seven. They have cost themselves in a number of those losses with inaccuracy and had more scoring shots than their opposition in losses against St Kilda, Collingwood and Carlton and the same amount against Port Adelaide.

Melbourne won the disposal count against Carlton with four players hitting the 25+, including Clayton Oliver. Max Gawn has provided first use with the Demons ranking top two in hitout and hitout to advantage differential. But the Demons lack an effective system from their back-half, ranking 17th for goals sourced from their defensive side of the ground.

Kozzie Pickett starred with five goals last weekend, while Bailey Fritsch chimed in with two. Fritsch has kicked 2+ in five of his past six.  Jake Melksham has kicked 15 goals in his past four matches.
