In a thrilling AFL Round 20 face-off, GWS Giants are set to clash with the Sydney Swans. The Giants, currently 6th, boast home-ground advantage and superior midfield depth, coming off a key victory against Essendon. Swans are clawing to stay in finals contention after a crucial win over North Melbourne, driven by standout performances from Isaac Heeney. GWS will be too strong for a resurgent Sydney Swans outfit when the local rivals meet in Friday night AFL.

The Giants come into this in 6th position on the ladder with 12 wins from 18 matches and were too strong for an undermanned Essendon outfit in Round 19, handing the Bombers a 48-point defeat.

In the same round, 10th placed Sydney enjoyed a 31-point win over North Melbourne to go 9-9, keeping their faint finals hopes alive. In a competitive season, another loss is likely to make it impossible for last year’s Grand Finalists to make the 2025 finals series.

Isaac Heeney comes in with some superb form, while the Swans have benefitted with the return of Errol Gulden and Callum Mills in recent weeks.

But GWS should control this match with their superior midfield depth, home-ground advantage and more efficient ball movement. The Giants have won five of their past six at ENGIE Stadium and rank top four in both disposals and scores generated from defensive 50 — a key strength against a Sydney side missing reliable tall targets up forward.

While the Swans have stayed in the finals mix with gritty wins, they’re still heavily reliant on a select few. Take the Giants in the 1–39 point range with Tom Green prominent, while both Jake Stringer and Aaron Cadman look likely to step up with 2+ goals inside a more balanced forward setup. Callum Mills can continue his solid form for the red and white.

  • GWS have won seven of their past eight matches, with three of those against top eight sides.
  • Tom Green had 34 disposals the last time the two sides met.
  • Jake Stringer has kicked 2+ goals in five of his past six matches.
  • Callum Mills has had 25+ disposals in four of his past six matches.

Head to Head

Sydney have won the past five matches between the two sides, including an upset 14-point win at the SCG in Round 8 this season. That came despite some big games from Tom Green (34 disposals), Finn Callaghan (33 disposals) and Jake Stringer (three goals) for the Giants.

The Swans were 27 points winners the last time the two sides met at ENGIE Stadium, which was in Round 15 of 2024. The Swans have taken out the past two at the venue and four of the past five. Errol Gulden has averaged 31 disposals from his past three matches against the Giants. Will Hayward has kicked nine goals from his past four.

GWS have won seven of their past eight matches. Three of their past four have been against sides that could potentially finish top four with those coming against Gold Coast, Brisbane and Geelong.

They have won five of six at ENGIE Stadium in 2025, including victories over Collingwood, Gold Coast and Geelong. Their recent form has been built on some slick ball movement from their defensive half and defensive 50, ranking 3rd for scores from these areas over the past five rounds. They are 4th for disposals per game in that period.

Tom Green and Finn Callaghan both had over 30 disposals in the win over Essendon. Callaghan has averaged over 30 in his five matches since returning from injury. Jake Stringer kicked three goals against Essendon and has seven in the past fortnight. He has hit the 2+ in five of his past six matches.

Sydney have won five of their past six matches. They suffered a tight loss to the Western Bulldogs in Round 16 and were  on the positive side of some close ones against Fremantle and St Kilda before their win over North Melbourne last weekend. .

With their key forwards, Logan McDonald and Joel Amartey, out of action for the majority of this season, Sydney have had to find alternative ways to goal. Their leading midfielder, Isaac Heeney, has spent large amounts of time up forward last weekend to dominate with five goals, taking his tally to 29 for the season.

Heeney capped his match off with 34 disposals in a truly dominant performance, while Nick Blakey, Callum Mills and Chad Warner all hit the 25+. Mills has had 25+ in four of his past six.
