Carlton enjoy a golden opportunity to make it two wins on the trot when they take on the Kangaroos on Good Friday.

The Blues opened up with four losses from winning positions in their first four matches but never gave West Coast a look last weekend when breaking through for their first victory of the season.

The pressure eases somewhat on Michael Voss with the Blues now at 1-4. North Melbourne come in with the same record after their 52-point loss to Gold Coast during Gather Round.

The Kangas led that match in the third quarter but conceded a series of easy goals in what was another second half capitulation, following on from a big defeat at the hands of Sydney the week prior.

There are massive question marks on the Kangaroos ability to defend. Carlton will be strong at the clearances and contested possessions in this match and if they can convert better than they did last week (17.19) it will not be a Good Friday for North fans.

Take the Blues to cover the line in this match. Charlie Curnow to have his kicking boots on after being wayward last weekend, while Harry Sheezel will continue to rack up plenty of disposals for North Melbourne

  • Carlton have won the last four matches between the two sides by an average margin of 37 points
  • Charlie Curnow has booted 14 goals in his last three matches against North
  • North Melbourne are conceding 110 points per game
  • Carlton rank 3rd in the competition for inside 50s and clearances

Head to Head

Carlton have won the last four matches between the two sides by an average margin of 37 points. Charlie Curnow has booted 14 goals in his last three matches against North, while Patrick Cripps has averaged just under 29 disposals.

North Melbourne’s Harry Sheezel has averaged 35 disposals in his last three matches against the Blues, while Paul Curtis has booted seven goals from his last three.

North Melbourne have shown some positive signs in their five matches but have struggled to consistently put together four quarters of footy. They led the Gold Coast in the third term last weekend before conceding 11 of the last 13 goals to go down by 52.

Defence is still a major concern and the Roos are conceding an average of 110 points per game. They are in the top half of the competition for goals scored. Nick Larkey has booted 16 from his five matches, while Paul Curtis has snagged. But they need to put the clamps on in defence.

North are breaking even in the clearances and play an uncontested possession style of footy (ranking 2nd for uncontested possessions). But this has not translated to inside 50 dominance (16th in the competition). Harry Sheezel and Caleb Daniel are averaging just under 30 disposals per game.

Despite coming in with a 1-4 record, the Blues are strong in a number of areas, including 3rd for inside 50s and clearances.

They led their first four matches at half-time before second half fadeouts saw them lose by 20 points or fewer. With last week’s 71 point win over West Coast, they have now outscored opposition by 13 this season.

The Blues had 36 scoring shots against West Coast and led the inside 50 count 73-35 and clearances 40-18. Their prowess around the footy did not lead to big scores in their first four matches, with a lack of connection hurting them going forward, going at just 62.5 points per game in the first four matches.

Adam Cerra, George Hewett and Sam Walsh are all averaging 25+ disposals this season, while Charlie Curnow and Brodie Kemp have gone at 1+ goal per game. Big Charlie continues to threaten but hasn't put it together yet and was wayward in front of goal last weekend with 2.4.

Harry McKay will miss after sustaining a concussion in his return last weekend, while fellow tall, Brodie Kemp, is out with an achilles injury. The Blues will need to rejig things down forward. Marc Pittonet is given a chance to come back from injury, freeing up Tom de Koning to pinch hit in the forward line.
