Collingwood can give the premiers a bit of a fright in Thursday night footy at the GABBA.

The Magpies come off a 31-point win over the Sydney Swans in Gather Round, despite missing a number of key players through injury.

That win sees the 2023 premiers go to 4-1 and their winning streak is now at four in a row. A win would see them join Brisbane at 5-1 with the Lions unbeaten so far in 2025.

Chris Fagan’s side looked gone in the third quarter last weekend against the Bulldogs before turning it on in the second half to claim a 21-point victory. Their five wins this year have been by 28 points or less and they have covered the line just once.

They have the class to trouble Collingwood but it won’t be easy for last year’s premiers, who have lost their past three to the Magpies, including this match last season.

This will go right down to the wire and the total points under is in play, while the line looks right within the reach of Collingwood with the 2023 Norm Smith Medallist, Bobby Hill set to continue his good form in matches between the two sides.

Nick Daicos has averaged 28 disposals in those games. Josh Dunkley picked up 25+ in the two matches last season for Brisbane. Bobby Hill has kicked seven from his past three against Brisbane. The Lions have won four of the past five between the two sides at the GABBA.

They have an abundance of guns that can roll through the midfield. Lachie Neale, Will Ashcroft, Hugh McLuggage, Josh Dunkely and Dayne Zorko are all averaging 25+ disposals this season. The Lions top the competition for clearances and are 3rd for contested disposals.

After an Opening Round shocker against GWS, Collingwood have responded with four strong victories. They have been against finalists from last year and have been built around pressure at the contest with the Pies ranking 3rd for tackles.

This has translated to inside 50s, ranking 4th, providing opportunities for the likes of Jamie Elliott and Bobby Hill, who have both kicked eight goals from five matches. Dan McStay, Tim Membrey and the injured Lachie Schultz are also going at 1+ goal per game.
