Collingwood will bounce back in the Friday night encounter, moving into the box seat for a top four finish.

The Magpies grip on the double chance has loosened right up after losing five of their past six but they only narrowly went down to Adelaide last weekend by three points and a win here will all but lock in a top four spot.

Craig McRae’s side got the better of the Demons by just one point on King’s Birthday, and recent history is well and truly on their side — having won the past four matchups.

For Melbourne, it’s a shot at redemption and a chance to salvage pride in what’s been a forgettable back half of the season.

Despite sitting well outside finals contention, the Demons have been competitive in patches, and their midfield, led by Clayton Oliver, continues to churn out big numbers.

Given the closeness of recent clashes between the two sides, taking Collingwood in the 1-39 point bracket looks to be the play here. Josh Daicos and Clayton Oliver will find plenty of the footy for their respective sides, while the total points under looks to be in play. Collingwood's last five matches have gone under, while these two have a history of tight and low scoring matches.

  • Collingwood have won the past four between the two sides
  • Four of the past five between Collingwood and Melbourne have gone under the total points
  • Melbourne’s Clayton Oliver has averaged just under 35 disposals from his past five matches against Collingwood
  • Josh Daicos has averaged 36 disposals from his past three for the Pies against the Dees.

Head to Head

Just one point separated the two sides in the Kings Birthday clash this season with Collingwood getting the upper hand, despite Melbourne producing more scoring shots. The Magpies have won the past four between the two sides. Seven of the past eight have been decided by 39.5 points or less.

Melbourne’s Clayton Oliver has averaged just under 35 disposals from his past five matches against Collingwood, while Josh Daicos has averaged 36 from his past three for the Pies.

The wheels have fallen off with the one-time premiership favourites losing five of their past six. Those losses have all been against top eight sides and the only win in that period was a scrappy one over 17th-placed Richmond. However, they are unbeaten in 10 matches against sides in the bottom half of the ladder this season..

Their structure and team defence has fallen away in recent weeks and the tally of 110 that Hawthorn scored a fortnight ago was the most of any side this season. But the signs were there against Adelaide, conceding just nine goals and 37 inside 50s.

Nick Daicos picked up 29 disposals in the tight loss to the Crows and has had 25+ in eight of his past nine, collecting 30+ in five of those. Tim Membrey and Jamie Elliott both booted two goals.

Bobby Hill remains a week by week proposition and the Magpie army will be desperate to see the 2023 Norm Smith Medalist in action as we head towards finals. Ed Allan was the sub last weekend and came on very late in the game.

Melbourne have won just two of their past 11 matches with those coming against West Coast and North Melbourne and they have won just two of 11 this season against top eight opponents.

Collingwood, however, will not be taking them lightly. The Demons were in winning positions in a few of those losses, including a fortnight ago against the Bulldogs, while it was some inaccuracy and a lack of polish in front of goals that cost them last time against Collingwood as well as losses to St Kilda, Port Adelaide and Carlton.

The Demons struggled for scoreboard impact last weekend with Jacob van Rooyen and and Harrison Petty the only multiple goalscorers with two each. Petty has kicked 2+ in his past three, while Bailey Fritsch has kicked 14 goals from his past six matches. Clayton Oliver picked up 28 disposals against Hawthorn and has gone 25+ in four of his past five while he had 23 in the other.
