Argentina vs Brazil in any sport usually provides fireworks and this night match in Buenos Aires promises to be an electrifying encounter. Fonseca looks like a genuine future No. 1 and multiple-time major champion, but his odds have already been inflated due to his rapid progress and recent performances in Australia (he's fourth favourite to win the tournament). Etcheverry is arguably top 20 level on clay and the Argentine is playing at home - that means his motivation levels will be big. Fonseca meanwhile will have his home event in Rio next week - and that tournament is an ATP 500, so you have to wonder if he will be going all out here. Regardless, I like Etcheverry as the slight underdog, with Fonseca still not used to playing these sort of opponents week in and week out.
Head To Head
This will be the first career meeting between the pair.
Tomas Martin Etcheverry Form
Etcheverry has won exactly one match at all four events he's played so far in 2025, so he will be hoping that trend continues in Buenos Aires, but also that he can improve and win back-to-back matches for the first time this season.
The Argentine defeated Billy Harris at the United Cup, Tristan Schoolkate in Adelaide and Flavio Cobolli at the Australian Open, but was eliminated in the second round of the last two events by Thanasi Kokkinakis and Marcos Giron respectively.
Etcheverry then turned his attention to the Davis Cup, where he overcame another teenager in Norway's Nicolai Budkov Kjaer before going down to Casper Ruud.
The 25-year-old is a former French Open quarter-finalist and has made the last eight in Buenos Aires in his last two appearances.
Joao Fonseca Form
Fonseca was on fire to end 2024 and start 2025, winning 14 consecutive matches to officially announce himself as a star of the future.
The 18-year-old captured the Next Gen ATP Finals title to finish off 2024 before going on a rampage in Australia, where he secured the Canberra Challenger title and qualified for his maiden Grand Slam at the Australian Open without dropping a single set.
Fonseca proceeded to claim his first top 10 scalp in the opening round of the main draw, producing a mind-blowing performance to defeat Andrey Rublev in straight sets. The Brazilian was stopped in five sets in the following round by Lorenzo Sonego, who went on to reach the quarter-finals.
Fonseca has played just one match since leaving Melbourne, going down in straight sets to Ugo Humbert in Davis Cup.

Verdict
Fonseca will dominate the tour in a few years time, but right now, I think his odds are inflated.
Even the best players suffer letdown moments after big breakthroughs and Fonseca might find it tough to back up his euphoric AO run - he already lost his next match in straight sets to Humbert.
Etcheverry on clay is an extremely difficult assignment and the Argentine has home court advantage - backing the World No. 44 to edge this.
