Lorenzo Musetti begins his European Open campaign against Yannick Hanfmann in Brussels. Musetti, ranked eighth in the Live ATP Race, seeks strong performances to qualify for the ATP Finals. However, Hanfmann poses a significant challenge, having won seven of his last eight matches. Despite a strong clay season, injuries have impacted Musetti’s performance recently. Hanfmann, who showed promising form in Shanghai, eyes a quarter-final spot. With both players in contrasting form, this match promises high stakes and potential surprises on the Brussels hardcourt.

Musetti is aiming to quality for the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin for the first time in his career after a superb season, but he still has some work to do over the next month. Musetti is currently in eighth spot in the Live ATP Race, but it might as well be seventh as Novak Djokovic is unlikely to play the tournament. Regardless, Musetti needs some big performances during this European indoor swing in order to lock up qualification, starting with Brussels.

However, this could prove a very tricky assignment for the Italian. Hanfmann is capable of some big tennis and his booming serve is lethal indoors. The German comes into this clash having won seven of his last eight matches at all levels - and that one defeat was against Djokovic in Shanghai, where he pushed the Serbian to a deciding set. Musetti retired in Beijing and was easily beaten by ATP Finals rival Felix Auger-Aliassime in Shanghai, so he isn't in the best shape right now. I'm going for the upset and backing Hanfmann to advance into the quarter-finals.

Head To Head

Currently locked at 2-2 across all levels, but this will be their first meeting off clay. Hanfmann prevailed in Madrid in 2023 before Musetti was a straight sets winner at this year's French Open.

Lorenzo Musetti Form

Musetti heads into this showdown with a 37-16 record on the season, breaking into the top 10 for the first time and giving himself a real shot of featuring at the year-end championships in his home country.

Most of Musetti's good work came during the European summer on clay, where he made the final of Monte Carlo before semi-final finishes at Madrid, Rome and Roland Garros.

Injuries halted Musetti's momentum after that, but he rebounded nicely at the US Open, where he made the quarter-finals.

However, Musetti is still searching for his first title since 2022 after he finished runner-up in Chengdu before retiring in Beijing. The Italian was then no match for Auger-Aliassime as he went down in the Shanghai R16.

Yannick Hanfmann Form

It hasn't been a great overall season for Hanfmann - he's registered a 9-11 record at tour-level coming into this clash, falling to No. 139 in the rankings after peaking at No. 45 two years ago.

There hasn't been much for Hanfmann to cheer about this season, but there's signs he could be in for a positive finish as he attempts to claw his way back towards the top 100.

The 33-year-old made the semi-finals of a Challenger in Jingshan before playing his best tennis of the year at the Shanghai Masters, qualifying for the main draw and defeating Lorenzo Sonego and Frances Tiafoe before going down in three sets to Djokovic.

Hanfmann has continued his encouraging form in the opening round of Brussels, taking out Matteo Arnaldi in three sets in the first round.

Verdict

Musetti isn't in the best shape coming into Brussels and he's not at his best on indoor hardcourt.

Hanfmann meanwhile is playing his best tennis of the season with some great wins under his belt over the last couple of weeks - I think the German is a decent chance for the upset here.
