Top seed Lorenzo Musetti continues his bid for a first ATP title this season when he squares off against Alexander Shevchenko in the Chengdu Open semi-finals on Monday night.

It's been a magnificent season for Musetti, but the Italian is still searching for his first title of the year and he is just two wins away from making it happen in Chengdu. Musetti owns a record seven match wins in Chengdu, advancing to the semi-finals on three consecutive occasions and finishing runner-up last year. Will 2025 be his year?

Shevchenko meanwhile is putting together one of those tournaments he tends to do a few times each season. The Kazakh is a hugely talented ball-striker, but inconsistency means he produces this sort of level scarcely. On current form, I think Shevchenko can trouble Musetti and perhaps take a set, but when push comes to shove, the top seed should prove too strong.

Musetti comes into this contest with a 32-13 record on the season, rising into the world's top 10 and recovering from the injury he suffered at Roland Garros, which means he will be now looking to qualify for the year-ending ATP Finals.

Currently ranked No. 9 in the world, Musetti put together a remarkable clay swing, reaching the Monte Carlo final before three semi-final finishes at Madrid, Rome and the French Open.

The Italian suffered a setback with a leg injury sustained in Paris, but bounced back strongly to make a run to the US Open quarter-finals.

Now aiming for a first title of 2025, Musetti is back into the Chengdu semi-finals for the third consecutive year, overcoming young gun Dino Prizmic in three sets before a 6-3 6-3 triumph over the dangerous Nikoloz Basilashvili in the quarter-finals.

Alexander Shevchenko Form

It's been a tough season for Shevchenko, who arrived in Chengdu with a poor 10-16 record at tour-level and down at No. 96 in the world - which is a far cry from the peaking ranking of No. 45 that he achieved last year.

Shevchenko lost in the opening round in three of the four slams, but did manage to qualify and make the second round at Roland Garros.

The Kazakh has made just the one quarter-final at ATP level for the season, doing so in Kitzbuhel before going down to eventual champion and countryman Alexander Bublik.

However, Shevchenko is enjoying the best tournament of his season here in Chengdu, reaching the semi-finals with victories over Gael Monfils (via retirement), Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and qualifier Taro Daniel.

Shevchenko is playing his best tennis of the season and could make life difficult for Musetti, but I expect the Italian to prove too strong in the end.
