Fonseca was extremely impressive in a straight sets dispatch of Tomas Martin Etcheverry in his opening round and I'm backing the Brazilian to take down another Argentine in relatively comfortable fashion here. Coria is your classic clay court grinder, but he doesn't have many weapons and his serve is weak, so there will be ample opportunity for Fonseca to attack - and if he produces the sort of level he has throughout the opening month-and-a-half of the season, then this should be one-way traffic. Fonseca to cover a -4.5 games handicap and make the quarter-finals.
Head To Head
This will be the first career meeting between the pair.
Joao Fonseca Form
It's crazy to think that not long ago, Fonseca was contemplating playing college tennis in the United States.
The 18-year-old has enjoyed a whirlwind rise over the last 12 months and especially since the back-end of last year, with Fonseca coming into this encounter having won 15 of his last 17 matches at all levels.
It all started with a run to the Next Gen ATP Finals title before Fonseca secured the Challenger title in Canberra and qualified for the Australian Open without dropping a set, completely dismantling top 10 player Andrey Rublev in the opening round.
Fonseca went down to eventual quarter-finalist Lorenzo Sonego in Melbourne and was upstaged by Ugo Humbert in Davis Cup, but he returned to winning ways with a brilliant 6-3 6-3 victory over Etcheverry in his Buenos Aires opener, blasting 34 winners (21 off his forehand wing).
Federico Coria Form
Coria is currently languishing outside the top 100 at No. 115 in the world and has spent the bulk of 2025 on the Challenger Tour so far.
The Argentine picked up his obilgatory hardcourt Grand Slam paycheck with an opening round loss to Tristan Boyer at the Australian Open before heading back to South America for the Challengers, where he suffered two quarter-final exits in Punta del Este and Piracicaba and a second round loss in Rosario.
Coria failed to qualify for the Argentina Open this week, losing to Laslo Djere, but he received a lucky loser entry to the main draw and made the most of his second chance, defeating Hugo Gaston in straight sets to earn a shot at Fonseca here.

Verdict
I thought Fonseca might struggle this tournament, but I was proven completely wrong with his outstanding performance against a much superior opponent in Etcheverry in the opening round.
Coria will make a lot of balls, but if Fonseca plays like he did against Etcheverry, he should be winning this with minimal fuss.
