Although he featured in the Laver Cup exhibition, Fonseca will be competing in his first professional tournament since a second round exit at the US Open after he opted to skip the entire Asian swing. The 19-year-old hasn't been able to replicate his stellar results from the start of the season and has been overtaken by Learner Tien for the highest-ranked teenager in recent weeks. Meanwhile, Van De Zandschulp remains one of the most enigmatic players on tour - he made the final of the ATP 250 in Winston Salem just before the US Open, but has lost five of his last six matches heading into this contest.

Van De Zandschulp is a strange player. He goes on huge losing streaks, but loves the big stage and rises to the occasion when in the spotlight - case in point his wins over the last couple of years against Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic. Facing who many are declaring as 'the future of tennis' probably counts as a big moment for Van De Zandschulp and Fonseca is underdone match-wise - he should fancy his chances in Brussels.

Head To Head

Fonseca leads 1-0, beating Van De Zandschulp 6-4 7-6 in Davis Cup action last year.

Joao Fonseca Form

Fonseca started the season by winning 20 of his opening 24 matches at all levels, securing his maiden ATP title in Buenos Aires and collecting two Challenger crowns in Canberra and Phoenix.

The Brazilian also qualified for his maiden Grand Slam and earned a first top 10 win when he beat Andrey Rublev in the opening round.

Fonseca also made the third round at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon, but the wins have dried up since the opening quarter of the season, with the 19-year-old losing in the second round of the US Open before skipping the Asian swing.

However, it's still been a stellar year for Fonseca - he'll have learned a lot about life on tour and there's no doubting the immense talent. It will be interesting to see how he finishes off 2025.

Botic Van De Zandschulp Form

It's been another relatively disappointing season for Van De Zandschulp - he's registered a negative 14-18 record on the year, with half of those wins coming at two tournaments.

Indeed, Van De Zandschulp reached the semi-finals in Kitzbuhel before making the final of Winston Salem a few weeks later.

However, the Dutchman has lost five of his last six matches since that final, including opening round exits in Chengdu and Shanghai during the Asian swing.

Currently down at No. 89 in the world, Van De Zandschulp showcased what he can do when he beat Alcaraz at the US Open last year and Djokovic in Indian Wells earlier this season - can he find that sort of form in Brussels?

Verdict

Tough to have much confidence in Fonseca after he skipped the Asian swing and has little experience indoors in Europe.

Van De Zandschulp loves the underdog tag against a big name - he could thrive in these conditions despite current poor form.
