Holger Rune vs Sebastian Baez Tips, Prediction & Live Stream - Rune to edge out Baez & reach Barcelona quarters
Holger Rune is set to face Sebastian Baez in the second round of the Barcelona Open, aiming to win consecutive matches for only the third time this season. Despite health issues, Rune, currently ranked No. 13, boasts a solid record when fit, while Baez has struggled against top-tier players, holding a 1-16 record vs top 10 opponents. The Argentine, ranked No. 35, is more comfortable on South American clay. Rune, if fully healthy, is expected to claim victory, although Baez might keep the match competitive.

Holger Rune vs Sebastian Baez Tips, Prediction & Live Stream
Holger Rune will look to win back-to-back matches for just the third tournament this season when he comes up against Sebastian Baez in the Barcelona Open second round on Wednesday.

It's been an up-and-down season for Rune - the Dane impressed with a fourth round finish at the Australian Open (taking a set off Jannik Sinner) and making the final of Indian Wells, but he has failed to win more than one match at his other four tournaments for the season. Additionally, Rune has been struggling with health and illness issues throughout the year - including in Monte Carlo last week, where he was forced to retire in his opening match.
However, Rune says he is back to full fitness after winning his Barcelona opener in straight sets - and if that's the case, I'm expecting him to take care of Baez here. The Argentine has never really made much of an impact on European clay (compared to dominating South American clay events), while he also has a horror 1-16 record vs top 10 players. Yes, Rune is currently ranked No. 13, but you get the point - Baez's game just doesn't match up well against the elite players. That being said, I think Baez can push this game total Over 21.5, but Rune is the far superior player and if healthy, he should be coming out on top in these conditions.
Head To Head
Baez leads 3-2, prevailing 2-6 6-2 6-3 at the Rome Masters in their most-recent clash in 2024.
Holger Rune Form
As mentioned, it's been a strange old season for Rune, who is trying to get back towards his career-high ranking of No. 4, which was achieved back in 2023.
Still just 21 years of age, Rune has compiled a 12-9 record for the season, with eight of those victories coming at the Australian Open and Indian Wells.
Rune's February was all over the place, competing indoors at Rotterdam and playing part of the Golden Swing in South America on clay, while he also retired in Acapulco before his run to the Indian Wells final.
The Dane lost his opening match in Miami against Reilly Opelka and retired in his Monte Carlo opener against Nuno Borges last week (due to food poisoning) before returning to winning ways in Barcelona this week, edging out veteran Albert Ramos-Vinolas 7-5 6-4 in the first round.
Sebastian Baez Form
Baez comes into this contest with a 13-8 record on the season and is currently ranked No. 35 in the world, down from a career-high of No. 18 that was earned last year.
It's been a typical season for Baez so far - early exits down under in Australia before lots of winning during the Golden Swing in South America, successfully defending his Rio de Janeiro title before reaching the final of Santiago.
The Argentine lost his opening matches at both Indian Wells and Miami before returning to clay, reaching the final of Bucharest before a first round exit to Tomas Machac at Monte Carlo.
Baez opened up his Barcelona campaign with a comfortable 6-1 7-5 victory over Damir Dzumhur.

Verdict
Baez is a bit of a flat track bully - he's great at beating those he should on clay, but he also has a 1-16 record vs top 10 players.
Rune, at his best, is amongst the game's elite, so if the Dane is back to full health, he should be winning this - but Baez can keep it somewhat competitive.
