Carlos Alcaraz vs Otto Virtanen Tips, Prediction & Live Stream
Carlos Alcaraz will be hoping to immediately reclaim the No. 1 ranking this week as he launches his Barcelona Open title quest against dangerous qualifier Otto Virtanen in the first round on Tuesday.
It was a disappointing start to the clay swing for Alcaraz - after suffering just one defeat on the surface throughout the entire 2025 season, the Spaniard has already tasted that losing feeling in his first tournament for 2026, suffering a straight sets defeat to rival Jannik Sinner in the Monte Carlo final this past weekend. To make matters worse, Alcaraz also relinquished the No. 1 ranking - but he can claim it straight back if he wins the title in Barcelona, with Sinner not competing this week.
Unsurprisingly, Alcaraz is the heavy favourite to go all the way in Barcelona for a third time, but Virtanen represents a potentially tricky banana skin in the first round. Alcaraz has a short turnaround from Sunday's final in Monte Carlo, while Virtanen has already played two matches in Barcelona after coming from qualifying, where he won both matches in straight sets - including a great victory over Alexandre Muller as the $3.50 underdog.
Virtanen has a huge game with big weapons when firing - the Finn almost certainly loses this match, but he could trouble Alcaraz at various stages if the Spaniard starts a bit cool from the disappointment of this past weekend. I'm going to back Virtanen to cover a big +6.5 games line, with Alcaraz prevailing with Over 18.5 games.
Alcaraz vs Virtanen Stats & Trends

- Alcaraz has failed to cover a -6.5 line in seven of his last nine Barcelona matches
- Virtanen has won 12 of his last 17 matches at all levels
- Virtanen has covered a +6.5 line in all 18 of his matches in 2026
Alcaraz vs Virtanen Head To Head
This will be the first career meeting between the pair.
Carlos Alcaraz Form Analysis
- 2026 Record: 21-3
- ATP Barcelona Record: 14-2
- Current Ranking: No. 2
- Career-High Ranking: No. 1 (2022)
It was a dream start to the season for Alcaraz - he made history by becoming the youngest player to complete the Career Grand Slam when he captured his maiden Australian Open title, while he backed it up with another title in Doha.
However, Alcaraz's form has dipped over the last month or so. The Spaniard suffered his first defeat of 2026 to Daniil Medvedev in the Indian Wells semi-finals before suffering a shock defeat to Sebastian Korda in his second match in Miami.
Alcaraz looked better in Monte Carlo as he advanced into the final, but he delivered a sub-par performance in a 7-6(5) 6-3 defeat to Sinner. The 22-year-old remains determined to immediately reclaim the No. 1 ranking in Barcelona this week after winning the title in 2022 and 2023.
“I saw that I have to win the tournament here if I want to get the No. 1 back. I think the battle between Jannik and myself is great. I think it probably provides extra motivation," Alcaraz said.
Otto Virtanen Form Analysis
- 2026 Record: 2-2
- ATP Barcelona Record: 0-0
- Current Ranking: No. 119
- Career-High Ranking: No. 91 (2024)
Virtanen is no doubt a top 50 talent, but he continues to struggle with consistency and how to harness his powerful game week in and week out on tour.
The Finn generally does his best work indoors, but he's dangerous on all surfaces and it will be interesting to see how he handles this occasion.
The 24-year-old has competed primarily on the Challenger Tour in 2026, making semi-finals in Manama and Thionville.
Making the step up to ATP level, Virtanen played great tennis in Barcelona qualifying over the weekend, registering back-to-back top 100 scalps over Aleksandar Vukic and Alexandre Muller.

Verdict
Alcaraz will get the win, but he could suffer a slow start and Virtanen has the weapons to do damage if he's in the zone - will back the Finn to cover.
