Alex de Minaur looks to continue his sensational start to the clay swing when he squares off against lucky loser Jacob Fearnley for a spot in the Barcelona Open quarter-finals on Thursday.

Nobody has won more matches than de Minaur on tour so far in 2025 and I fully expect the Aussie to advance into another quarter-final in Barcelona here.

Demon is making a habit of defeating those ranked below him - indeed, the World No. 7 has registered a stunning 35-2 record vs players outside the top 30 over the last year. A lot of those victories have been completely one-sided, while de Minaur has also gone 18-1 in 2025 after winning the first set, so he's going on the with the job when he gets the initial ascendancy.

I'm backing another dominant win for de Minaur here, with Fearnley playing his first ever professional tournament on clay - Under 19.5 total games and the Aussie covering a -5.5 games handicap are the two plays.

Head To Head

This will be the first career meeting between the pair.

Alex de Minaur Form

De Minaur comes into this contest with a 21-7 record on the season and looking to improve on his career-high ranking of No. 6.

It was a great start to the season as de Minaur made a fourth straight Grand Slam quarter-final at the Australian Open, while he also finished runner-up in Rotterdam to Carlos Alcaraz.

The Aussie probably didn't go as deep as he would have wanted with R16 showings at Indian Wells and Miami, but he returned to top form to launch his clay swing in Monte Carlo last week.

De Minaur produced some thunderous performances to crush the likes of Daniil Medvedev (6-2 6-2) and Grigor Dimitrov (6-0 6-0) before going down to Lorenzo Musetti in the semi-finals.

Hoping to make the quarter-finals in Barcelona for the third time, de Minaur got his campaign off to a solid start with a 6-4 6-4 triumph over Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

Jacob Fearnley Form

It's been a rapid rise for Fearnley over the last 12 months, with the Brit rising to a career-high ranking of No. 74 after being outside the top 500 this time last year.

Fearnley started the season in encouraging fashion, making the semi-finals of the strong Canberra Challenger (lost to Joao Fonseca) and the third round of the Australian Open, where he went down to Alexander Zverev.

The 23-year-old only played two more tour-level events before arriving in Barcelona, going out in the opening round of Indian Wells to Fonseca once again before also running into a familiar foe in the second round of Miami, falling to Zverev.

Playing in his first ever tournament on clay, Fearnley was beaten in Barcelona qualifying by Daniel Elahi Galan, but gained entry into the main draw as a lucky loser - and the Brit made the most of his second chance, taking out Roberto Carballes Baena 6-1 7-5.

Verdict

De Minaur has won 35 of his last 37 matches against players outside the top 30 and he should extend that remarkable record against Fearnley, who is playing his first clay event and already lost in qualifying.

Backing Demon to cover a -5.5 games line with Under 19.5 total games.
