It's do or die for Sydney, who currently sit in seventh spot on the ladder heading into the final game of the regular season. With Adelaide sitting out Round 29 with the bye, the Sky Blues only need to secure a point to climb into the top six due to their superior goal differential. Meanwhile, City know a win will lock in a place in the AFC Champions League Elite, while a draw would also be enough provided Western United and Western Sydney Wanderers fail to win their respective games.
With so much on the line, it promises to be a thrilling contest. It would be a disaster for Sydney to miss out on the finals after also blowing their chance to host a Champions League final following their defeat to Lion City in the semi-finals. I'm backing Sydney to lift and claim what they need from this game.
- Sydney are unbeaten in 13 of their last 16 games in all competitions
- City have failed to win half of their last six games
- City have drawn their last two games
Head To Head
Sydney haven't beaten City in the A-League since 2022, with Aurelio Vidmar's side coming away with a brilliant 3-2 triumph at Allianz Stadium in Round 24 in their only previous clash this season.
Melbourne City Form
Considering the amount of injuries they endured throughout the season, City should be applauded for going unbeaten in 19 of their 25 games coming into this contest.
Currently in second spot on the ladder, City have their Champions League Elite destiny in their own hands - however, if they lose this game and depending on other results, they could finish as low as fifth.
Regardless, City will want to bring some winning momentum into the finals after back-to-back draws with the Wanderers and Adelaide in their last two outings.
Melbourne City Team News
City are still dealing with a few injuries, with James Jeggo, Andrew Nabbout, Mat Leckie, Samuel Souprayen and Jayden Necovski all sidelined.
Sydney FC Form
It's been a long and wild season for Sydney, who have juggled Champions League commitments for the bulk of the campaign and now find themselves on the brink of elimination from the A-League.
It's not an ideal scenario for Sydney, but they know that a draw is all they need to leapfrog Adelaide into the top six, with the Reds out of action with the bye this weekend.
After a come-from-behind 3-2 triumph over the Jets, Sydney could have secured finals football last week, but they suffered a 1-0 loss to Western United. Young attacker Adrian Segecic and Adelaide striker Archie Goodwin are both locked on 13 goals as they both look to take out the Golden Boot.
Sydney FC Team News
Alex Grant is in doubt with a calf injury.
Verdict
Both teams need a win for their respective league finishes, but that could lead to them cancelling each other out.
I'm backing Sydney to get the job done and at least secure a draw, which has been the end result in City's last two matches.
