Penrith Panthers vs Wests Tigers NRL Tips - Panthers to make it seven straight wins

The Penrith Panthers, riding a six-game winning streak, are poised for another victory against the Wests Tigers in NRL Round 21. With returning stars Nathan Cleary and Izack Tago, the Panthers aim to win by 13+ margin. Their defense, having allowed just 26 points over the last three games, stands strong against the Tigers' weakened attack. With previous victories over teams like the Eels by significant margins, a similar result is anticipated. Dylan Edwards, having scored a double last week, is likely to add to his tally.

After a slow start to the season, the Panthers are clicking into gear and hunting a fifth consecutive premiership. Penrith are still far from their best, but timing is everything in this competition and no team will want to face the four-time reigning premiers come September. Nathan Cleary, Isaah Yeo and Izack Tago are back on deck this week and the Panthers should be able to come away with a relatively routine victory against a Tigers outfit that aren't offering much at the moment.

Penrith have defeated lowly teams like the Eels and Rabbitohs in their last two outings by 13+ margins and I expect them to coast to another win here. The Panthers' defence has tightened up in recent times, allowing just 26 points across their last three games.

With the Tigers struggling considerably in attack, I just can't see them troubling the scoreboard in this one. With that in mind, Under 48.5 total points is another play for this clash. In terms of a tryscorer, the Tigers have conceded a four-pointer to the opposition fullback in two of their last three games and Dylan Edwards crossed for a double last week - take the NSW Origin No. 1 to score again.

  • Panthers are on a six-match winning streak
  • Tigers have lost seven of their last nine games
  • Panthers have won six of the last eight meetings
  • Panthers have won their last five games at CommBank
  • Panthers have won their last two games by 13+ margins
  • Tigers' last two defeats have been by 13+ margins
  • Panthers have seen Under 48.5 points in their last seven games
  • Tigers have seen Under 48.5 points in five of their last six games
  • The last 13 meetings between the sides dating back to 2017 have seen Under 48.5 points
  • Dylan Edwards scored two tries last week vs Souths
  • Tigers have conceded a try to the opposition fullback in two of their last three games

Head To Head

Panthers have won six of the last eight encounters between the sides, including a most-recent 18-14 victory in Round 14 this season as winger Tom Jenkins crossed for a hat-trick.

Penrith Panthers Form Analysis

It's been a wild ride for the Panthers this season, but when you really ponder, it's not surprising in the slightest.

There was always going to be a hangover from winning four premierships on the trot - and the Panthers are far too good to just surrender this season without a fight, which is exactly what they're doing right now.

Penrith are still miles away from the level that saw them take out those four premierships, but their defence is starting to become a weapon again, leaking an average of just 8.6 points across their last three games.

Defence wins premierships and I bet a lot of people are now rueing the fact they didn't jump on Ivan Cleary's side when they were paying $25+ to win the Grand Final a couple of months back.

Even though this current run started with wins over the Eels and Tigers, you can pinpoint the game against the Warriors across the Tasman as a turning point in Penrith's season, when their second-string side came away with a 28-18 victory.

The Panthers backed it up with a gutsy 8-6 victory over the second-placed Bulldogs and have got the job done with 13+ victories over the Eels and Rabbitohs in their last two fixtures.

Penrith Panthers Team News

Some huge inclusions for the Panthers this week - Nathan Cleary, Isaah Yeo and Izack Tago are back in the side, while Brian To'o continues to play despite knee/hamstring niggles.

Paul Alamoti and Jack Cole drop out the side, while Brad Schneider goes to the bench.

Wests Tigers Form Analysis

It's turned into a season of what could have been for the Tigers - they've probably done enough to avoid another wooden spoon, but they would need a minor miracle to make the finals, coming into Round 21 six points adrift of the top eight.

The Tigers started the season full of promise, but things took a turn for the worse with the Lachlan Galvin saga and the club haven't really recovered, despite the best efforts of star recruits Jarome Luai, Terrell May and Sunia Turuva.

Seven defeats from their last nine games see the Tigers languishing in 12th spot on the ladder, level on points with the Dragons and trailing the Dolphins and Roosters in ninth and 10th by four points.

The Tigers have been a tough watch, especially in attack, over the last month and last week was no different, with the joint venture side escaping with a 21-20 victory over last-placed Gold Coast at Leichhardt courtesy of a last-ditch field goal by Adam Doueihi.

Izaac Thompson will play his first game for the Tigers after arriving from South Sydney, replacing Charlie Staines on the wing in the only change from last week.

Verdict

The Panthers are backed for a seventh consecutive victory and a third straight by a 13+ margin. The Tigers' attack is non-existent and will struggle against a resurgent Penrith defence, so Under 48.5 total points is expected.

Dylan Edwards can add to the double he scored last week vs Souths by crossing again here.
