Round 2 is usually where I start leaning into try-scorer markets.

The early weeks of the NRL season can throw up some strange results, but attacking patterns start showing themselves quickly. You begin to see where the ball is going, which edges are vulnerable and which players are constantly around the action.

After going through the Round 2 slate, these are the try-scorer plays I’m backing this week (odds correct at time of publishing).

The bet I’m most excited about this round, it’s still the Alex Johnston two try play in the Sydney Roosters v South Sydney Rabbitohs matchup.

Records bring moments, teammates know it and teams often lean into those situations. If Souths get attacking chances, they will be looking for Johnston.

And if he gets one early, the second suddenly becomes very live.

This game feels like it could open up a bit.

This is a pure value swing. Centres can often jag first tries off kicks or broken plays and at $19 it is simply too big to ignore for a small play.

The Cowboys edge attack looked sharp early in the season and Luki was heavily involved.

At $3.70 this feels a touch generous for a back rower who runs strong lines close to the goal line. If the Cowboys get any attacking momentum, Luki is exactly the type of player who ends up crashing over.

The Storm edge structure always creates opportunities for their back rowers.

Jahrome Hughes loves isolating defenders and sending his edge runners into space. That makes Joe Chan a really interesting price at $4.00.

Iro was in terrific try scoring form last season and I expect him to open his account soon.

Even in a tough matchup against Penrith, $3.70 for an outside back with his finishing ability is difficult to pass up.

Sometimes the simplest bet is still the best one.
