New Zealand Warriors vs North Queensland Cowboys, NRL Round 9 2025 - Expert Prediction

Two of the form sides in the competition look to work their magic and continue their surge up the ladder as the Warriors and Cowboys collide in what is shaping as a cracking contest on Saturday at Suncorp.

After a shocking start to the season in Vegas, the Warriors have been one of the surprise teams in the NRL, winning five of their last six games and losing only to the Storm, while the Cowboys have also put a slow start behind them, coming into this encounter on the back of a four-game winning streak.

I'm backing an entertaining and open affair here, with the Cowboys coming away with the two points. Todd Payten's side dropped 50 points on the Titans last week, with their attack starting to click. The Warriors are looking dangerous too, so I think this game total will exceed 47 points, but for me, the Cowboys have been playing the slightly better football over the last month. The Warriors' poor showing on the road to Melbourne a couple of weeks ago is still fresh in my memory.

Meanwhile, after being dropped to reserve grade earlier in the season, Jeremiah Nanai has come back with renewed fire in the belly. Nanai was always one of the most dangerous second-rowers in game over the last few years and he's returned to his blistering best, scoring a double last week against the Titans. I think he can cross again at a venue where he's enjoyed success at in the past.

  • Cowboys are on a four-game winning streak
  • Cowboys scored 50 points vs Titans last week
  • Cowboys have seen Over 47.5 points in four of their seven games this season
  • Warriors have seen Over 47.5 points in two of their last four games
  • Jeremiah Nanai scored two tries last week vs Titans & has scored seven tries from his last seven appearances at Suncorp

Head To Head

It's been the Warriors who have had the wood over the Cowboys in recent times, winning the last three meetings between the teams, including a dominant 42-12 victory in Round 14 last year.

I confess I thought the Warriors were genuine wooden spoon contenders after their poor showing in Vegas to start the season, losing heavily to the Raiders - who have since gone on to impress themselves.

To their credit, Luke Metcalf and Chanel Harris-Tavita have stepped up in the halves and guided the Warriors to five wins from their last six games.

Surging into the top four as a result, the Warriors are coming off a comfortable 26-12 home victory over the Knights last week, with Adam Pompey and Jackson Ford scoring doubles.

The Cowboys were also looking like finishing closer to the bottom of the table than the top after losing their opening three games of the season, with Todd Payten under early pressure to get the best out of his under-performing side.

Payten swung the axe on some key figures and it's worked a charm, with the Cowboys bouncing back strongly and putting together a current four-game winning run.

It all started with a 30-20 home win over the in-form Raiders before victories on the road against the Panthers and Rabbitohs. The Cows then obliterated the Titans 50-18 last week, scoring the last seven tries of the match as Robert Derby crossed for a hat-trick, Jeremiah Nanai scored a double and Jaxon Purdue made it six tries from his last six games.
