Murray Bridge Best Bet - Race 1 No. 7 Our Brave Boy

Noel Callow has started to hit his straps in South Australia, riding a winner for the Phillip and Tommy Stokes yard at each of the past three Saturday metropolitan programs, and the combination has another strong chance early at Murray Bridge with Our Brave Boy.

The son of Brave Smash brings some strong form from his Victorian two-year-old season, including a narrow debut defeat at Pakenham where he finished ahead of Gin Twist, who subsequently went on to win at Listed level, before Our Brave Boy added another runner-up finish at Caulfield.

He was given time after failing on wet ground at Sandown in June and has looked sharp in his lead-up work, winning a Pakenham jump-out before moving nicely when second in a 600m Morphettville hit-out on September 15.

Callow stays aboard for Saturday’s return and, although barrier 18 leaves some work to do, the wide draw is not necessarily a major negative on this spacious circuit, particularly in maiden company where clear galloping room can be important.

On exposed race form he sets a strong standard, with Czech Out the only other runner in single figures, and that rival was well held fresh at Morphettville, leaving Our Brave Boy looking the one they have to beat.

Murray Bridge Roughie - Race 4 No. 14 Mrs Penny Cracker

Her overall strike rate is modest, but Mrs Penny Cracker spent a long period as a maiden in Victoria before joining Aaron Bain and Ned Taylor, a stable that has had success placing tried horses in South Australia.

The six-year-old recorded two victories last season, including a 1707m success at Gawler on January 3, before remaining competitive when stretched further in distance later in the campaign.

All three runs this preparation have had merit, with excuses first-up and second-up before she improved onto firmer ground at Morphettville last time and finished fourth over 1514m.

That latest effort should bring her close to peak fitness for the rise to 1600m, and Saturday’s BM0-64 does not appear any tougher than the company she faced last start.

Back on her home track, deeper into the preparation and available at a big price, Mrs Penny Cracker looks capable of producing a sharp improvement.

Still lightly raced and learning his trade through his first two preparations, Common Interest nevertheless showed plenty of ability as a three-year-old, highlighted by an early breakthrough and subsequent metropolitan placing.

There were excuses in his first two autumn runs before he returned to this track and produced a strong victory, earning a shot at stronger company later in the campaign.

The Richard and Chantelle Jolly-trained gelding was then spelled and returned at Morphettville Parks on September 5 with a runner-up finish, settling behind the speed before attacking the line late.

That form has enough substance and the rise to 1400m looks suitable, while he drops 1.5kg from his first-up assignment and returns to Murray Bridge from barrier two.

Common Interest is one of the more talented horses in the field and, with the fresh run under his belt and firmer ground another positive, he looks right in the race at an each-way price.

Murray Bridge Next Best Bet - Race 7 No. 15 Canny Miss

After finishing runner-up on Heavy ground on debut at Bairnsdale on June 12, Canny Miss changed states and joined the Garret Lynch stable before resuming with an impressive maiden victory at Balaklava on September 16.

Although she went around as favourite, the four-year-old could hardly have been more convincing in her first run for the new yard, leading throughout to score over 1050m.

That maiden rated strongly for the program, with Canny Miss comfortably bettering the overall times recorded in the two handicaps that followed, adding further merit to the performance.

She now steps into a 0-64 where several rivals appear fairly exposed, while Heart Of The Med and Simply Mac are among the lightly raced runners with upside, but the daughter of Hanseatic remains open to plenty of improvement herself after such a dominant first-up display.

While she is potentially looking for something a little easier, Lady Memphis is also worth respecting at a huge price after two runs back, with little luck in either attempt.
