Round two of the 2026 Supercars Championship heads to Albert Park as part of the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, and the early-season questions from Sydney now get tested on a very different stage.

The parkland circuit, less than four kilometres from Melbourne’s CBD, delivers a 5.3km, 16-corner layout that rewards commitment under braking and precision through high-speed direction changes. Unlike Sydney, this is a no-compulsory-pit-stop format with four short, sharp races, meaning track position and qualifying execution will decide almost everything.

Sydney produced nine teams inside the top 11 in the standings, Broc Feeney and Matt Payne tied on points, and Toyota’s GR Supra program exceeding expectations.

Melbourne now determines whether that parity was genuine or circumstantial. Historically, Triple Eight have thrived here, but Mattstone Racing have also shown surprising strength at Albert Park. With short 19-lap races and no mandatory stops, there is little margin for recovery. If you start up front, you control the race.

Qualifying will be decisive because the format splits the field into groups and compresses opportunity across four sessions. With only 19 laps in the three main races and 14 on Sunday, clean air becomes a weapon and overtaking opportunities shrink rapidly.

That makes Broc Feeney a strong play to dominate qualifying again after showing front-running pace in Sydney, even if his weekend there was not entirely clean.

Matt Payne shapes as the most immediate challenger given his consistency and ability to capitalise when others falter. Cam Waters remains a threat at any circuit requiring commitment under braking, while Toyota’s early speed suggests Chaz Mostert or Ryan Wood could land a front-row start if execution holds.

Expect tight margins and at least one surprise qualifier inside the top five as the new competitive order continues to settle.

The races themselves will reward aggression early and discipline late. With no compulsory stops, there is no strategic reset, so starts will define outcomes. Feeney’s ability to control from the front makes him the safest overall round bet, particularly if he converts strong qualifying into clean launches.

However, Toyota’s straight-line strength and early momentum make them genuine threats to steal a race, especially in the Thursday or Friday sprints when track evolution can shuffle the order.

Matt Payne’s consistency means he is well placed for multiple podiums rather than a single headline win, but don't be surprised if the Kiwi finds himself on the top step during the long weekend of racing.

Reliability and mistakes will matter more than tyre degradation this weekend. Short races amplify pressure, and one poor qualifying session could ruin half a driver’s weekend.
