Crvena Zvezda Form & Team News

Crvena Zvezda enter the second half of the EuroLeague regular season in ninth place with a record of 11 wins and 8 losses. This can be considered a satisfying position given the turbulent start to the season and the dismissal of coach Sfairopoulos after just two EuroLeague games.

Following the arrival of coach Sasa Obradovic, Crvena Zvezda began playing much better basketball and recorded seven consecutive wins. A dip in results followed shortly after, which was somewhat expected.

After a poor performance and an easy loss in Paris, Crvena Zvezda regrouped and recorded a convincing 87-65 away win against Anadolu Efes in Istanbul, their first ever victory over Efes in the EuroLeague.

Many will say that Efes poor display played a role in such a result, but full credit must go to Crvena Zvezda players, who delivered a very mature and disciplined performance.

The Nigerian duo of Jordan Nwora and Chima Moneke were the main contributors, combining for nearly half of the teams points. Nwora was especially motivated against his former club, scoring 24 points, while Moneke added 16 points and 8 rebounds along with his usual defensive impact.

If there was one negative, it was the number of turnovers. Crvena Zvezda committed 23, which will be unacceptable against a much more serious opponent like Valencia.

Valencia Form & Team News

Even the most optimistic Valencia fans likely did not expect their team to be leading the EuroLeague table after 19 rounds.

Back in Europes elite competition this season, Valencia fully deserve their position, playing efficient and attractive basketball. Pedro Martinez is doing an excellent job with a club where he holds legendary status, having delivered their only Spanish league title.

Last week Valencia defeated Partizan at home 86-73. The final score was more convincing than the game itself, as Valencia had to work harder than expected against an out of form opponent.

The key moment came in the final quarter, which Valencia won 21-10 to finally break their rivals resistance.

As usual, coach Martinez distributed minutes evenly among his players, allowing Valencia to enter the final ten minutes fresh and use defensive intensity to make the difference.

Italian international Darius Thompson led the way with 17 points and 6 rebounds. Brancou Badio and Nathan Reuvers scored 14 points each, Jean Montero added 13, while Jaime Pradilla finished with 11 points and 7 rebounds.

Head to Head

This will be the second meeting between Crvena Zvezda and Valencia this season. In the first matchup, played a month and a half ago, Valencia won at home in a tight game, 76-73.

Verdict

Both teams come into this game in excellent spirits following winning streaks in their respective competitions.

Crvena Zvezda showed against Anadolu Efes the level of defense and energy required to win consistently and reminded everyone of the form they displayed during their seven game winning run.

That same approach will be key against league leaders Valencia, but they must drastically reduce the number of turnovers, as a high quality team like Pedro Martinez squad will punish every mistake.
