Gold Coast Suns vs Essendon Bombers, Round 6 2026 - Expert Prediction

The market isn’t overreacting to the current form of these two teams. The 45.5 line is right where it should be but Gold Coast at home after back to back losses is a scary prospect for any team.
The Suns have won 7 of their last 8 games at home and have averaged 117 pts across those 7 victories. One of those was a 153-58 win over Essendon at the end of last season but they have also cleared 100 pts against Geelong, Brisbane and Melbourne during that span.

The Bombers finally released the pressure valve last weekend, snapping a 17 game losing streak. While that feeling cannot be understated, the relief could almost be too much that they come in a little flat against one of the quickest teams in the comp on a dry track and typical Gold Coast Saturday afternoon sunshine.

Gold Coast have had their speed stifled the last two weeks but with one of the best coaches in the game at the helm and a bunch of players in the prime of their careers, the likelihood of that repeating itself against a team that has struggled to contain pace, is low.

Both the Hawks and Bulldogs tore apart the Bombers mids in their matches earlier this season and for a Suns team that need to return to form, stretch their legs and assert some dominance, the trends in previous matchups point toward this one pushing out to a big score.

Take Gold Coast to win and cover the -45.5 line as the home favourite but keeping the Game Total Under 188.5 pts. Matt Rowell to have 30+ touches is the top player prop along with Ben King to kick 4+ goals.

  • Gold Coast have won 4 straight against Essendon, covering in all 4. Both their games last year finished with 40+ margins.
  • 6 of the last 8 matchups have gone Under 188.5 with one of the games last year finishing on 189 pts.
  • Matt Rowell has had 30+ disposals in 2 of his last 3 games vs Essendon and had 32 last week in the loss to Sydney.
  • Ben King has kicked 18 goals across his last 4 games vs Essendon 3 of the 4 games all being 4+ majors.

Head to Head Stats

The Suns have won 4 straight games against Essendon but the ledger is 5-4 to the Dons since the start of the 2019 season.

Both games last year ended with 40+ margins in favour of Gold Coast, the matchup at People First Stadium ending 153-58.

5 straight games have gone Over the Game Total while the Suns have covered in all of their wins over this span.

Gold Coast Suns Form Analysis

The Suns have now dropped 2 straight games after flying out of the gates with a 3-0 record to start the year.

Last weekend they lost by 32 pts to the Swans 100-68 at Gather Round being completely outplayed at the contest while also struggling to convert the limited chances they had in scoring range.

Gold Coast were unable to take a single contested mark during the game while the midfield was overrun by Sydney’s relentless pressure and speed. The back to back losses are probably not concerning but show that the Suns still have work to do if they are to be in the mix for a flag this season.

Essendon Bombers Form Analysis

The Bombers finally secured their first win of the season and snapped a 17 game losing streak last weekend in a stunning 113-68 win over the Dees. In what has been brewing for a few weeks, the shackles were finally broken for Essendon as they kicked 11 second half goals to run away with victory lifting themselves off the bottom of the ladder.

The Bombers exceeded their season averages in almost every measure with 9 more Inside 50’s and better efficiency with the ball across the board. Archie Roberts had a career high 42 disposals as well as a goal while Darcy Parish had 34 touches and 7 clearances.

Numerous positional changes seemed to get the Dons rolling and it will be interesting to see if Coach Brad Scott keeps tinkering or lets this play out.
