Fremantle Dockers vs Carlton Blues, Round 7 2026 - Expert Prediction

It shapes as a familiar story for Carlton fans with the Blues to match Fremantle for large periods of the Round 7 clash before again falling short.

The Blues head in with a 1-5 win-loss record and have been in winning positions in those losses. Most recently it was a five-point loss to their old rivals, Collingwood, after leading the Magpies by 18 at three-quarter time.

Fremantle come in with a 5-1 record but the Optus Stadium match will be a lot closer than what the win-loss record and the head-to-head odds suggest.

Expect a low-scoring grind with the total points under firmly in play and Carlton capable of sticking within the 36.5-point line despite likely falling short.

Fremantle have built their season on method, composure and defensive structure, and that was again evident in the Western Derby when rolling West Coast by 56 points in the 97-41 scoreline.

Carlton’s have been competitive all season but have lacked composure in key moments and their inability to convert scoreboard pressure has been their undoing.

This shapes as a match played largely between the arcs. Fremantle will look to control possession and use their improved ball movement to find marks inside 50, while Carlton will aim to defend deep and generate scoring through transition. Both sides have shown a tendency for games to tighten up, particularly when the pressure lifts, which brings the unders into play.

The midfield battle will be pivotal. Fremantle’s mix of size and class, led by Caleb Serong and Hayden Young, gives them an edge, but Carlton’s contested work through Patrick Cripps and Sam Walsh has been strong. Walsh, in particular, continues to find the ball consistently and should again be prominent.

Ultimately, Fremantle’s system, cohesion and ability to play the game on their terms should see them grind out another win. However, Carlton’s competitiveness and ability to stay in the fight suggests this won’t blow out beyond six goals.

Take the Dockers to win in a controlled, low-scoring contest, with the total points under and Carlton to cover the line both strong plays. Sam Walsh and Jordan Clark are a couple to consider in player props

  • Carlton’s past five matches have been decided by 28 points or less.
  • The past six matches between the two sides have averaged a total of 146 points.
  • Sam Walsh has had 30+ disposals in four of his past five matches against Fremantle.
  • Jordan Clark has had 25+ disposals in his past two matches and 30+ in his past two against Carlton.

Head to Head Stats

Fremantle were 27-point winners at the venue in Round 21 last season, kicking seven goals to one in the last term. Luke Jackson was dominant in the ruck, while Josh Treacy, Jye Amiss and Patrick Voss kicked three goals apiece.

Carlton won the three matches prior to that over the Dockers. The past six between the two sides have all been decided by margins below 39.5 points.

Standout player performances in recent meetings have come from:

  • Sam Walsh – The Carlton midfielder has averaged 34 disposals in his past five matches against Fremantle, hitting 30+ in four.
  • Jordan Clark – Fremantle’s running defender has had 30 disposals in his past two against the Blues.
  • Hayden Young – Has had 25+ disposals in his past three matches against Carlton (excluding the Round 21 match last year when injured early).

Fremantle Dockers Form Analysis

The Dockers have matured into a composed unit and have won five of their six matches this season. That record could easily be 6-0 if not for a second-half fade in Round 1 against Geelong.

Since then, Fremantle have shown an ability to win tight, contested games, edging Adelaide by two points and Collingwood by six before last weekend’s 56-point win in the Western Derby against West Coast.

Jye Amiss booted five goals in the Derby and continues a strong run of form, while Patrick Voss added three. The Dockers’ three-pronged attack of Amiss, Voss and Josh Treacy has combined for 40 goals this season, giving them multiple scoring avenues.

Jordan Clark was outstanding last weekend with 27 disposals and over 600 metres gained, driving Fremantle’s ball movement from half-back, while Hayden Young made an immediate impact in his return with 23 disposals and eight inside 50s.

Carlton Blues Form Analysis

Carlton sit at 1-5 and have struggled to close out matches, repeatedly surrendering winning positions. That trend continued last weekend, giving up an 18-point three-quarter-time lead to lose by five points to Collingwood.

The Blues are averaging just 79 points per game and have yet to score more than 86, while conceding around 100 per game. Their inability to capitalise on scoring opportunities and convert momentum into scoreboard pressure has been a consistent issue.

Against Collingwood, they showed improved ball movement and transition play, but once again failed to sustain it for long enough. A burst from the opposition in the final quarter proved decisive, exposing their inability to absorb pressure late in games.

Sam Walsh (28 disposals) and Patrick Cripps (25) were again prominent, while Mitch McGovern continues to provide a target up forward, kicking three goals last weekend and at least two in five consecutive matches.
