Kokkinakis always saves his best tennis for his hometown tournament, with the Aussie winning the only ATP title of his career in Adelaide back in 2022, while Etcheverry hasn't won back-to-back matches at a regular ATP event since reaching the Lyon final in May 2024.
Head To Head
This will be the first ever meeting between the pair.
Tomas Martin Etcheverry Form
Etcheverry put together a 31-29 record on the main tour last season, breaking into the top 30 for the first time after reaching the third round of the Australian Open, where he went down to Novak Djokovic after beating Andy Murray in his previous match.
The Argentine also made the third round of Roland Garros and the US Open last season, but he did struggle somewhat in the second half of the year, failing to win back-to-back matches outside of the slams and Davis Cup.
Etcheverry's highlight was making the final on the clay of Lyon shortly before the French Open, going down in a deciding-set tiebreak to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. The 25-year-old also made clay semi-finals in Houston and Barcelona last season.
Launching his 2025 season at the United Cup, Etcheverry was outclassed in straight sets by Alex de Minaur before taking out Billy Harris in three sets. Etcheverry moved onto Adelaide this week, where he was able to survive multiple set points in his opener against Aussie wildcard Tristan Schoolkate before prevailing 7-6 6-3.
Thanasi Kokkinakis Form
It's one of the great mysteries in tennis that Kokkinakis has never been ranked higher than No. 65 in the world. Injuries and the overall lifestyle of the tour have certainly contributed, but Kokkinakis really should be taking his game to the next level.
Nevertheless, the 28-year-old repeatedly saves his best tennis for Adelaide, where he feels motivated to perform in front of his home fans.
Kokkinakis has made at least the semi-finals of Adelaide on three previous occasions, winning his maiden ATP title at the tournament in 2022, where his last four matches of the tournament went the distance.
Kokkinakis was also forced to play three sets in his Adelaide opener earlier in the week, toppling the tricky Yoshihito Nishioka 6-3 3-6 6-3.

Verdict
Should be another tight battle involving Kokkinakis in Adelaide - the Aussie went three sets in his last four matches of the 2022 tournament, where he ended up winning the title, while he also went the distance with Nishioka earlier this week.
Kokkinakis was hitting his heavy forehand magnificently throughout that victory and if he maintains that level, he should have enough quality to edge out Etcheverry, who didn't look all that spectacular in his opening round.
