Fritz is enduring a disappointing season and will be in danger of dropping out of the top 10 shortly if things don't pick up, with the American defending Wimbledon quarter-final and US Open final points at the next two slams. Fritz comes into this tournament having lost four of his last five matches, including a grim opening round defeat at Roland Garros to Daniel Altmaier.

The initial transition to grass is never easy, so Fritz could be in trouble again here. Halys already has a match under his belt (Fritz had a first round bye) with a solid win over Lorenzo Sonego, while it's taken Jannik Sinner and Holger Rune to beat him in his last two Wimbledon appearances, where he reached the third round. Halys can certainly play on the lawns and could easily catch an out-of-form Fritz cold in Stuttgart.

It's been a poor season for Fritz to date - he's gone 17-10 coming into this clash and is yet to win a title, falling from a career-high No. 4 to No. 7 in the world.

With some big results to defend in the next few months, Fritz desperately needs some wins to lessen the pressure he will undoubtedly feel during the North American summer on hardcourt.

Fritz had a shocking clay swing, losing four of his last five matches and crashing out of the French Open in the first round.

The American has played well on grass in the past, including last year when he won the Eastbourne title before reaching the Wimbledon quarter-finals, beating Alexander Zverev before going down to Lorenzo Musetti.

Quentin Halys Form

Halys comes into this contest with a negative 10-11 record at tour-level for the season and chasing just the second top 10 scalp of his career.

Indeed, Halys has a 1-13 record against the top 10, but that lone victory did come earlier this season in Dubai when he conquered then No. 9 Andrey Rublev on his way to the semi-finals.

That was definitely the highlight of Halys' season to date, although the Frenchman did enjoy a solid run to the third round of Roland Garros, going down in five sets to Holger Rune.

Halys has shown he can play on grass throughout his career, reaching the third round of Wimbledon in the last two years, including as a qualifier in 2024.
