After losing three matches at the Next Gen ATP Finals just before Christmas, it was looking like Mensik was going to start the 2025 season fatigued, especially as he was struggling with his fitness at various stages throughout his breakout year on tour.
However, Mensik seems unaffected by any physical concerns and now he's in a strong position to claim his first ATP title in Auckland.
Mensik had a solid Brisbane International last week, making the quarter-finals before falling to the explosive Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
The Czech has continued his fine form this week in Auckland, edging out Pablo Carreno Busta in three sets in his opening round before taking the scalp of top seed Ben Shelton, firing 33 winners in the 7-6 4-6 7-5 triumph.
Nuno Borges Form
Borges had a 2024 season to remember, but now comes the biggest test - backing up all of those achievements and maintaining his current place inside the world's top 40.
The 27-year-old started the season with a bang by defeating Grigor Dimitrov to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open, while he also joined an exclusive club by becoming only the fifth man to defeat Rafael Nadal in a clay-court final, securing his maiden ATP title in Bastad.
After beating Mensik to make the US Open fourth round, Borges didn't win another match for the remainder of the season.
The Portuguese No. 1 launched his season in Hong Kong, reaching the second round, while he's overcome Luciano Darderi and Mariano Navone in three sets to make the quarter-finals in Auckland this week.

Borges saved three match points to conquer Mensik in New York, but it's unlikely lightning strikes twice here.
The Portuguese has been fortunate to face two of the worst hardcourt players in the Auckland draw so far in Darderi and Navone, while Mensik is coming off a victory over top seed Shelton.
Both players also tend to find themselves in long battles - will back Mensik to cover a -1.5 games line and to prevail in three.
