Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard kicks off his defense of the Swiss Indoors title against Joao Fonseca in the first round. With a notable victory in Basel last year over top-ranked players, Perricard heads into the match with recovering form after reaching the semi-finals in Brussels. In contrast, Fonseca has struggled throughout the season, with recent losses and no indoor match wins. The match will mark their first encounter, with Perricard expected to have the upper hand considering the current conditions and his recent productive matches.

Mpetshi Perricard put together one of the more memorable weeks of last year in Basel, surging to his maiden ATP 500 title on the back of some seismic serving, defeating three top 25 players on his way to the silverware. Ranked No. 50 at the time, the giant-serving Frenchman took out the likes of Holger Rune, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Ben Shelton to lift the title and ultimately break into the top 30 for the first time. However, with the pressure of those points dropping off, can Mpetshi Perricard repeat those efforts this week?

It's not a bad opening draw to be honest. Fonseca's form from early in the season has disappeared - in fact, he hasn't won back-to-back completed matches in normal ATP events since Miami in March (he did make third rounds at Roland Garros and Wimbledon). Additionally, the 19-year-old has also never won a tour-level match indoors, losing his opening round in Brussels last week. These are the conditions Mpetshi Perricard thrives in and he should have the slight edge on current form here.

Head To Head

This will be the first career meeting between the pair.

Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard Form

Mpetshi Perricard comes into this contest with an even 23-23 record at tour-level for the season, four spots below his career-high of No. 29 in the world.

However, a defeat in this match would see the Frenchman tumble to No. 55 in the world, with 500 ranking points to defend in Basel this week.

After a rather tough season, Mpetshi Perricard has found some form over the last couple of weeks - he defeated World No. 4 Taylor Fritz to make the third round of Shanghai, while he registered another top 10 scalp over Lorenzo Musetti in reaching the semi-finals of Brussels indoors last week.

The 22-year-old only dropped one set on his way to the Basel silverware last year and will be hoping to find that same serving groove in the Swiss city this week.

Joao Fonseca Form

Fonseca heads into this clash with a 21-15 record at tour-level for the season, but there's absolutely no doubt his form has tailed off dramatically from the start of the season.

The Brazilian captured his maiden ATP title in Buenos Aires and won two Challenger titles across the opening two months of the year, but apart from solid third round runs at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, he hasn't really made an impact - with Learner Tien recently overtaking him as the world's highest-ranked teenager.

The 19-year-old lost in the second round of the US Open to Tomas Machac and decided to skip the entire Asian swing.

Fonseca returned to action in Brussels last week, but was defeated in the opening round in straight sets by Botic Van De Zandschulp.

Verdict

These are the conditions Mpetshi Perricard thrives in, while Fonseca has been down on form for months now.

Coming off a semi-final last week in Brussels and with multiple top 10 wins over the last month, Mpetshi Perricard should have the edge to begin his Basel title defence.
