Shelton has yet to really assert himself on European clay, although the slightly quicker conditions at a bit of altitude in Munich certainly help him - the big-serving American made the final at this tournament 12 months ago and he will be hoping for another deep run after a difficult last month on the tour.

Meanwhile, Nava is playing with house money in Munich after losing in the final round of qualifying before gaining entry into the main draw as a lucky loser. Unlike most Americans, Nava loves playing on the dirt and has won seven of his 13 matches on the surface so far in 2026.

Regular readers of Bets.com.au tennis predictions will know I love a bit of tiebreak value when it comes to Shelton matches and this is another good spot. It was a great start to the season for Shelton as he made another Australian Open quarter-final before capturing a fourth ATP title at the 500 event in Dallas.

However, Shelton was struck down by illness ahead of the Sunshine Swing and he subsquently won just one match across Indian Wells and Miami, losing to Learner Tien and Alexander Shevchenko.

Shelton kicked off his clay campaign in Houston, but he continued to struggle with physical issues, winning just the one match before exiting to Thiago Agustin Tirante.

The 23-year-old enjoyed a nice run to the Munich final in 2025, beating good clay courters such as Luciano Darderi and Francisco Cerundolo before going down to Alexander Zverev.

Unlike most American players, Nava loves playing on clay and he recently his his career-high ranking of No. 74 after reaching the Santiago quarter-finals during the Golden Swing.

However, Nava has dropped outside the top 100 again after losing lots of points due to his amazing run of making four straight Challenger finals at this stage of the season in 2025, winning three of them.

Stepping up to ATP level, it was always going to be difficult for Nava to maintain that winning momentum, but he's giving it a solid crack.

The 24-year-old successfully qualified for the Monte Carlo Masters main draw last week before pushing Miami runner-up Jiri Lehecka to three sets. Nava lost in the final round of Munich qualifying on the weekend, but has made it into the main draw as a lucky loser.
