It's been a difficult last few months for Zverev following his third Grand Slam final defeat at the Australian Open. In fact, Zverev has failed to make a quarter-final in his last four tournaments, including an opening round exit in Monte Carlo last week.
Zverev produced arguably his best performance since January when he defeated Alexandre Muller in straight sets in his Munich opener, but he still has a lot of work to do this week - and he's got what could be a tough opponent here. Altmaier has a very solid 4-6 record against top 10 players throughout his career and he's defeated Zverev in the past, along with taking a set off his higher-ranked compatriot in another meeting. Altmaier has won five of his last six matches coming into this contest and is in great form - I'm backing Over 20.5 total games for this encounter, with the World No. 68 a good chance to sneak a set at good odds.
Head To Head
Zverev leads 2-1, but Altmaier won their most-recent clash in three sets in Acapulco last year.
Alexander Zverev Form
Zverev has compiled a 15-7 record on the season, but that mark shortens to just 7-6 since the Australian Open.
Not for the first time in his career, Zverev's form has completely deserted him following a Grand Slam final defeat, with the German clearly struggling for motivation at the smaller events.
The World No. 3 had a disastrous Golden Swing and lost to Learner Tien, Tallon Griekspoor and Arthur FIls in Acapulco, Indian Wells and Miami respectively.
Back on clay, things didn't get any better for Zverev in Monte Carlo as he went down in his opening match against Matteo Berrettini - an admittedly tough draw.
Zverev won back-to-back Munich titles in 2017 and 2018, but he hasn't been beyond the quarter-finals since. The 27-year-old was clinical in his opening match, racing past Alexandre Muller 6-4 6-1.
Daniel Altmaier Form
Altmaier comes into this showdown with an even 9-9 record on the season and looking for the fifth top 10 scalp of is career.
Always a dangerous player who has struggled for consistency throughout his career, Altmaier's achieved two notable results so far in 2025.
The first solid run came at Rotterdam, where Altmaier qualified and reached the quarter-finals of the ATP 500 event, going down to eventual runner-up Alex de Minaur.
Altmaier also qualified at the Monte Carlo Masters last week, defeating Felix Auger-Aliassime among others before falling to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz.
The 26-year-old got off the mark in Munich with a 7-6 7-6 triumph over Chun Hsin Tseng in the opening round.

Verdict
Zverev has struggled over the last few months, losing almost as many matches as he's won.
Altmaier meanwhile is in good form, winning five of his last six matches, while he also prevailed in his most-recent encounter with Zverev. Altmaier also took a set off Zverev at the US Open two years ago.

Backing Altmaier to push this Over 20.5 total games and he's good value to take a set.
