An intriguing contest awaits in the Hangzhou Open semi-finals on Monday night as third seed Alexander Bublik comes up against local wildcard Yibing Wu.

Bublik has been one of the best players in the world over the last few months, coming into this clash having won 20 of his last 23 completed matches, collecting three ATP titles in that period. Meanwhile, Wu is playing just his fourth tour-level event of the year as he continues to battle injury problems. However, at his best, Wu has top 20 level talent and he's proving it again this week in his hometown of Hangzhou, knocking out second seed Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals.

This is a very tough match to call. Obviously Bublik is in the form of his life, but he can still be prone to lapses, while Wu is capable of beating a lot of top 20 players on his day. I'm backing Over 22.5 total games in what should be a tight contest and there's good value for Wu to continue his fairytale run to the final.

This will be the first career meeting between the pair.

Bublik heads into this showdown with a 29-17 record at tour-level for the season, but his level since the French Open in May has been phenomenal.

As mentioned, Bublik has won 20 of his last 23 matches, highlighted by three ATP titles in Halle (where he beat Jannik Sinner along the way), Kitzbuhel and Gstaad, along with making the French Open quarter-finals and US Open R16.

Those results have helped propel Bublik back into the world's top 20 and now the next step for the Kazakh is to produce this sort of tennis over a sustained period of time.

Bublik is doing a good job so far in Hangzhou, overcoming Aleksandar Vukic in three sets in his opener before crushing Dalibor Svrcina 6-1 6-1 in just 53 minutes.

Yibing Wu Form

Wu had won just two tour-level matches heading into this tournament, with injuries once again crippling his year as he languishes down at No. 196 in the rankings.

However, Wu is far better than his current ranking, which he proved when he became the first Chinese man to win an ATP title in Dallas 2023.

The 25-year-old peaked at No. 54 in the world later that year, but elbow surgery and injuries to his wrist, shoulder and back have restricted his time at tour-level.

Wu is making up for lost time this week in Hangzhou, registering two impressive wins over Adrian Mannarino and Sebastian Korda in three sets before producing a stunning comeback to beat Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals. Medvedev served for the match at 5-4 in the second set, but Wu's natural shotmaking went to another level and he managed to pull off a memorable 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-4 victory.

Verdict

Alexander Bublik v Yibing Wu

Wu has won three consecutive three-setters so far in Hangzhou and I think he's a chance of making it four here.

Bublik deserves to be favourite, but Wu is much better than his current ranking suggests - as Medvedev found out in the previous round. Backing Over 22.5 games, with Wu pulling off the upset.
