The Group 1 Goodwood Cup headlined the opening card of the 2023 Goodwood Festival and there was an upset result in the feature race, with Quickthorn taking out the staying major on Tuesday.
Sent to the front by jockey Tom Marquand, who also steered the gelding to a 14-length victory in last year's Group 2 Lonsdale Stakes at York, the pair opened up a big space early on their rivals in Tuesday's two-mile feature and they couldn't be caught, with the Hughie Morrison-trained galloper recording a six-length victory.
It was the first Group 1 success for the son of Nathaniel, who has now won nine from 21 starts overall and despite starting as a $17 chance in the Goodwood Cup, he arrived there off a Listed triumph in June.
Glorious Goodwood continues on Wednesday, which sees the Aidan O'Brien-trained Paddington as an odds-on favourite to win the Sussex Stakes, with the exciting three-year-old aiming for fourth Group 1 triumph on the day two feature.
