Best Bet:
Race 6 No. 4 Palentino Heights
Thomas Carberry’s representative failed to score in 2024 however he did register a couple of decent efforts in defeat including when third at Donald in May.
The pick was beaten just over five-and-a-half-lengths when contesting a 2200m Restricted 58 handicap held on a soft 5 track that day.
The gelding failed to shine over the same distance at Bendigo eleven days later however and subsequently missed the rest of 2024.
The four-year-old made a pleasing start to this season when staying on nicely from off the pace over 1700m in a Restricted 64 handicap at Warrnambool last month.
The form of that contest is working out well with the third and eighth home both winning next time with the drop in grade a positive in this event.
The extra 100m is a further positive and Tom Madden’s mount is taken to record his first win since breaking his maiden at Echuca in October 2023.
Value Bet:
Race 4 No. 12 Calvisio
The daughter of Castelvecchio fetched $30,000 when led through the ring at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sales in 2023.
The filly showed glimpses of ability in her three jumpouts prior to putting in a solid effort when making her race debut at Camperdown last month.
The three-year-old raced from off the pace in a ten horse field that day staying on nicely to register a fourth on a good 4 track.
The selection was beaten three-and-a-half-lengths when jumping from barrier eight that day with the pick’s breeding suggesting that she will appreciate the extra 400m she tackles here.
Symon Wilde’s filly is expected to have improved for that debut effort with the softer going forecast here unlikely to pose an issue.
Market Mover:
In the second race of the day Day In Heaven has been backed in from a high of $3.30 to a $2.80 quote with Ladbrokes for trainer Nathan McPherson and jockey Adam McCabe.
The six-year-old built on a promising Werribee second when successful by nearly three lengths over 2100m at Stony Creek early last month.
The wet conditions are no issue to the mare and she looks to hold obvious claims in a small field.
Stats Say:
Trainer Stephen Theodore horses are running well in the main currently and he is doubly represented on the card.
The handler boasts an impressive 29% strike-rate (9/31) when booking Jacob Opperman and the pair team up in races seven and eight.
Bulls On Parade has been racing in South Australia in recent starts and he gets in off a nice racing weight in the seventh following an eighth over 1600m at Morphettville.
In the finale Suzido came close to completing a double when narrowly beaten from a wide barrier at Strathalbyn recently.
The mare has a better barrier here and looks to hold strong claims having shown a liking for the softer going expected in the past.
