Flemington stages its ANZAC Day meeting on Saturday, April 25, with an eight-race card highlighted by the Listed VRC St Leger for three-year-olds over 2800m.

A balanced program of developing types and seasoned performers shapes the day, while punters can also explore feature racing through Group 1 Previews.

Flemington Tips April 25

WGCDR Ian Bayles DFC Tips (Race 4)

Flemington Favourite - Race 4 No. 2 Mukhtalif

There is an opportunity for a two-bet play in Race 4 with Mukhtalif and Skippers Canyon.

Mukhtalif, the ex-Shadwell galloper, impressed on Australian debut with a soft two-length victory.

Second-up at the same trip and grade, he only rises 1.5kg after the Logan Bates claim.

Staying at 1800m is perhaps a slight query, but he is progressive.

Skippers Canyon appeals at an each-way quote, bringing plenty of raw talent despite his racing pattern, and his April 4 resumption over 1400m in stronger company against a trifecta better suited at that distance was terrific, although he will need luck.

Auckland Thoroughbred Racing Inc. Trophy Tips (Race 5)

Flemington Next Best Bet - Race 5 No. 4 King Zephyr

Still lightly raced, King Zephyr did put in a shocker first-up at Caulfield, but there were excuses after pulling up lame from that March 21 run.

He has since won a Pakenham jumpout and was given a searching workout in the process.

Exposed form suggests he is a pretty straightforward horse to place.

His record on big circuits and between 1300m and 1400m has been faultless, which was evident in a second-up spring win on the Sandown Hillside track.

He also bolted in at his only try over this track and trip, and the wider draw is a positive for a galloper who likes to get back, find room and build momentum.

VRC St Leger Tips (Race 6)

Flemington Feature Bet - Race 6 No. 15 Intervened

On paper, the VRC St Leger looks a bit of a raffle, and the early market suggests that as well.

Intervened has opened at big odds as a maiden with only three starts to his name.

His Pakenham run on March 5 was encouraging before failing to handle heavy ground second-up over 2000m when well backed.

The Cranbourne jumpout on April 13 was much better than the ninth-of-10 finish reads, with the son of Kermadec particularly strong through the line.

He shapes as a long-distance type who wanted to do a few more laps that morning, and with Ciaron Maher’s record with young stayers, he gives every indication he will run the trip.

Flt Lt Peter Armytage Handicap Tips (Race 7)

Flemington Best Bet - Race 7 No. 15 Zakouma

Grahame Begg has a strong team engaged for Saturday’s ANZAC Day meeting, and arguably the pick of them is Zakouma.

The five-year-old has opened his 2026 account with a winning hat-trick, all by decent margins.

He has comfortably worked through the grades, going from a Class 1 to a BM70 and then to a Saturday BM84 in his latest.

That March 28 form has already been franked through runner-up Alder, the subsequent Terang Cup winner.

While he meets more accomplished stayers here, many have either reached their ceiling or are out of form, whereas Zakouma is still on the way up and, down on the 53kg minimum, looks well placed to continue the streak.

William Newton VC Handicap Tips (Race 8)

Flemington Value Bet - Race 8 No. 12 Madiyya

This resuming Hayes-trained galloper is superbly bred, with Madiyya a half-sister to dual Group 1 winner Grunt and Group 2 winner Zayydani.

Her first campaign was terrific, with only a wide gate on debut stopping her from putting together a four-peat.

Across the autumn of last year, her last two wins came at Saturday metro level.

While still competitive, she did not progress across three runs in November and December, although the Cranbourne resumption was effectively a barrier trial.

Still lightly raced, she finds a suitable BM78 assignment here and has moved well in two jumpouts leading in, including winning the latest over 800m at Flemington.
