Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix Preview & Predictions

George Russell will take pole and win again at Suzuka, but Ferrari will close the gap more than at any point so far this season.

Formula 1 heads to Suzuka for round three of the 2026 season, and the early signs point to another high-intensity weekend at one of the most demanding circuits on the calendar. After Melbourne’s energy struggles and Shanghai’s reset, Suzuka sits closer to China in terms of energy recovery, allowing teams to regenerate battery more effectively through its flowing high-speed layout.

That doesn’t make life easy. Suzuka is a true driver’s circuit, with the Esses, Spoon Curve and 130R all punishing even the smallest mistake. With grass and gravel waiting just beyond the racing line, errors will carry real consequences, especially with these more unpredictable 2026 cars. Tyre stress is also extreme, forcing Pirelli to bring the hardest compounds available.

Mercedes arrive as the benchmark with two wins from two, but Ferrari’s performance in China suggests this could be their strongest opportunity yet to challenge. Suzuka rewards balance and confidence through high-speed corners, exactly where Ferrari showed signs of closing in.

Key Weekend Stats

  • Suzuka allows full energy regeneration, unlike Melbourne’s limitations
  • Only 16 overtakes recorded last year, highlighting track position importance
  • Expected one-stop race despite high tyre wear
  • Pirelli compounds: C1 (Hard), C2 (Medium), C3 (Soft)

Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix Qualifying Tips

Qualifying at Suzuka is all about confidence through high-speed corners and extracting maximum performance from the car in one flowing lap. Mercedes continue to hold the edge here, particularly with their ability to unlock extra power in Q3, which has proven decisive in the opening rounds. Russell looks the safest pole candidate again given his comfort in the car and ability to deliver under pressure.

Ferrari should be much closer than in Shanghai, with Suzuka’s medium and high-speed corners playing to their strengths. Expect both Leclerc and Hamilton to challenge for the front row if they can match Mercedes’ final qualifying push. McLaren remain slightly behind but could surprise if they finally unlock better race-to-qualifying balance, while Verstappen’s consistency keeps him firmly in the mix even without the outright fastest package.

Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix Race Tips

The race will likely be dictated by track position and rhythm rather than aggressive strategy. With overtaking historically limited at Suzuka, controlling the race from the front is critical, particularly in what is expected to be another one-stop event. Mercedes still look like the most complete package over a race distance, and Russell’s composure gives him the edge to manage the race once again.

Ferrari are the biggest threat, especially if they can stay within range through the opening stint and apply pressure during pit cycles. Hamilton’s growing comfort in the car adds another dimension to their challenge. Verstappen should remain a top-five contender through racecraft alone, while McLaren will be aiming simply to stay in touch and capitalise on any mistakes ahead.

Verdict

Russell for pole and the win, Antonelli second, Hamilton podium, Ferrari close the gap.
