2027 Edition - First in the Middle East
The 20th edition of the FIBA Basketball World Cup will take place in Qatar from 27 August to 12 September 2027. This marks the first time the tournament will be hosted in the Arab world and the first major senior FIBA event in the Middle East & North Africa region, with games spread across four venues, all considered part of the greater Doha area.
Thirty-two teams will compete in the main tournament once the qualifiers conclude, with Qatar receiving automatic entry as hosts.
How Qualification Works
Global Qualifiers Structure
Before the World Cup itself, teams around the world must earn their place through a series of qualifying tournaments organized by FIBA. The 2027 Qualification phase began following regional continental events and will run from late 2025 through early 2027 across six windows.
The windows are 9-day blocks where national teams play home-and-away games in their respective regions. These windows are:
- 1st Window: 24 Nov – 2 Dec 2025
- 2nd: 23 Feb – 3 Mar 2026
- 3rd: 29 Jun – 7 Jul 2026
- 4th: 24 Aug – 1 Sep 2026
- 5th: 23 Nov – 1 Dec 2026
- 6th: 22 Feb – 2 Mar 2027
Across all regions, 80 national teams battle for the available spots in the tournament (31 aside from Qatar). The qualifiers feature a format similar to previous cycles where results carry from the first round into the second round, making every game matter.
Asian Qualifiers - Where Australia Competes
For Australia and other Asia/Oceania teams, qualification takes place through the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers, which run alongside the broader global qualifiers. Sixteen teams from Asia and Oceania are competing for seven spots (with Qatar already automatically qualified as host).
Group Stage - First Round
In the first round, the 16 teams are divided into four groups of four teams. Each team plays home-and-away matches against its group rivals over the first three windows (Nov 2025, Feb 2026, Jul 2026). Results from these games determine who advances to the second round.
Australia competes in Group A alongside New Zealand, the Philippines, and Guam, a regionally compelling group that showcases serious competition early in the campaign.
Second Round & World Cup Qualification
The top three teams from each first-round group advance to the Second Round, where groups merge, and teams carry over their results. After further home-and-away fixtures in the remaining windows (Aug, Nov, Feb), the top teams plus the best fourth-placed side, earn qualification to the World Cup.
This structure ensures that every window and every match can influence Australia’s path to Qatar making the entire series meaningful for domestic fans.
Australia’s Boomers & What Comes Next
Australia’s national team the Boomers, have a strong basketball tradition and are ranked among the world’s top sides. As of the latest qualifiers, the Boomers are active in Group A with an eye on moving smoothly into the second round and ultimately securing one of the coveted spots in the World Cup.
Fans can follow the team’s qualifying schedule, live stats, rosters, and results via FIBA’s official qualifiers hub, which tracks performance throughout each window.
Looking Ahead to Qatar 2027
Once all qualified nations are confirmed by early March 2027, the World Cup draw will set the groups for the main tournament phase. That event, usually held a few months before the tournament, determines the matchups for the group stage in Doha.
At the World Cup proper, 32 teams are sorted into eight groups of four. The top two from each group then advance to the next round of competition, setting the stage for the final knockout phases and ultimately the championship game in mid-September 2027.
For Australian basketball fans, the 2027 World Cup campaign is both a showcase of national talent and part of the broader international basketball calendar. The Boomers’ qualification journey spans nearly two years, offering numerous high-stakes matchups and plenty of opportunities for Aussie supporters to rally behind their team on the road to Qatar.
