NBA 2026-27 Season Preview - Can the Knicks Repeat?

The New York Knicks are champions for the first time since 1973, but they are not walking into 2026-27 as the undisputed team to beat. Oklahoma City and San Antonio sit at the top of the early market, Philadelphia have detonated the Eastern Conference with two huge arrivals, and the title race has shifted hard in one offseason.

The Defending Champions

The Knicks earned the right to be treated seriously. They beat San Antonio 4-1 in the 2026 Finals and Jalen Brunson closed Game 5 with 45 pts. That is a championship core with a closer who has already handled the biggest stage.

But a repeat is a different task. New York now carry the target in an East that has become much nastier. The Knicks remain the standard in the conference because they have the title, the leader and the continuity. They do not get a soft runway back to June.

Eastern Conference

The genuine contenders

New York belong in the first group until somebody knocks them off. The 2025-26 regular season ended at 53-29 before the Knicks lifted the trophy, so this was not a surprise run from a middling team. Brunson is the reason the floor remains high and the title experience changes the pressure around the entire group.

Philadelphia are the headline threat. The 76ers brought in Jaylen Brown and LeBron James after being swept by New York in the conference semi-finals, turning a 45-37 team into one of the deepest starting fives in the league on paper. The ceiling is obvious. The health question is just as obvious. If this group is available in April, the East runs through Philadelphia and New York.

Detroit and Cleveland sit in the next line. Detroit won 60 games last season and Cleveland finished 52-30, so neither side should be treated as a cute playoff story. The Pistons have earned contender status. The Cavaliers have to prove their regular-season record translates when the games tighten.

Teams on the rise

Miami are the big swing team after landing Giannis Antetokounmpo. A top-five player moving to a franchise that knows how to build a defensive identity immediately changes the East. The Heat do not need to win 60 games to become a nightmare matchup. They need a healthy core and enough offence around Giannis when the playoffs slow down.

Toronto are another market mover after a strong offseason. They are not in the same title bracket as New York, Philadelphia or Miami yet, but the Raptors are no longer a team the East can pencil in as an easy series.

Regression candidates

Boston take the biggest hit. Jaylen Brown is gone and the Celtics have lost the two-way wing who carried a huge share of their ceiling. A proud franchise does not become irrelevant overnight, but the path from contender to playoff side is a real one when a player of that level leaves the conference.

Philadelphia also carry a different form of risk. The market loves the talent. It should. But a roster built around LeBron, Brown and an already established core has no margin for a run of injuries. The upside is title-level. The floor is much lower than the market’s first reaction suggests.

Western Conference

The genuine contenders

San Antonio and Oklahoma City lead the conversation for a reason. The Spurs went 62-20 and made the Finals. The Thunder went 64-18. Both teams have already built elite regular-season habits, and neither is starting from a place of theoretical potential.

San Antonio now have the scar tissue of a Finals loss. That matters. The Spurs were close enough to see the standard and young enough to improve again. Oklahoma City are the other heavyweight: 64 wins is not a lucky number and the Thunder will enter every series expecting to control it.

Denver, Minnesota and Houston are the teams that can crack the top group. The Nuggets won 54 games, the Timberwolves 49 and the Rockets 52. That is a serious Western pack. None need a miracle to make a conference final.

Teams on the rise

The Lakers chose a new direction after losing LeBron, bringing in Walker Kessler to reshape the roster. The move makes sense for a side that needed more size and rim protection, but it also places more responsibility on the players still there. Their ceiling depends on whether the new build holds up when the game slows down.

Regression candidates

Golden State missed on the LeBron chase and now face the reality of a West that became younger and deeper around them. This is not a side to write off, but the margin has disappeared. The Warriors need their established names to beat better, fresher rosters on the nights that matter.

What Will Define the NBA Season?

The East has finally caught up to the West at the top. New York have the ring, Philadelphia have the most dramatic new pairing and Miami have added a franchise-changing force. Out West, San Antonio and Oklahoma City are not coming. They are already here.

The season starts with the Knicks as champions. It ends with the team that best handles the pressure created by an unusually loaded pair of conferences.
