GWS will put a dent in Gold Coast’s top four hopes with a win over the Suns in Sunday afternoon AFL action.

The Round 15 fixture shapes as the biggest ever between the two sides that joined the competition in 2011 and 2012.

GWS come in with a confidence boosting 11-point victory over last year’s premiers at the GABBA, a victory that took their win-loss record to 8-6. Gold Coast are 8-4, courtesy of a couple of byes already. They had the break last weekend and went down to Geelong in Round 13 by 24.

The Suns midfielders can get on top in the contested possessions and clearances but the Giants have showed they can weather the storm in their defensive half.

They have an excellent recent record over the Suns, while their forwards, including Jesse Hogan, loom large inside 50. Take the home side in the head to head. Lachie Whitfield will find a stack of the footy with Hogan to chip in with multiple goals.

  • GWS have won the past four matches between the two sides by an average margin of 33 points
  • The Giants come off a win over Brisbane
  • Gold Coast have lost their past two matches
  • Lachie Whitfield had 40 disposals the last time these two sides met

Head to Head

GWS have won the past four matches between the two sides by an average margin of 33 points. They were 39-point winners at ENGIE Stadium in Round 19 last season. Jesse Hogan kicked four goals in that match, while Lachie Whitfield had 40 disposals. Sam Flanders had 43 for the Gold Coast.

Toby Greene has kicked 10 goals from his past three matches against the Suns, while both Whitfield and Flanders have averaged over 30 disposals. Noah Anderson has averaged 29 for the Suns in his past three.

The Giants have been a bit of a jekyll and hyde side in recent times, producing some brilliant football against quality opposition but dropping games they were expected to win. Prior to the Lions match, they were rolled by Port Adelaide at Manuka Oval by 16 points, while they just edged struggling Richmond by three points at ENGIE Stadium the week before.

They have won three of four at the venue in 2025, including a win over the ladder leaders, Collingwood, in the Opening Round. The Giants rank 14th for clearances and 17th for contested possessions over the past five rounds but their defence has held up well and up the other end they are 6th for scoring.

The piled on 17 goals against Brisbane with Jesse Hogan booting six and Aaron Cadman snagging five sausages. Lachie Whitfield, Finn Callaghan and Lachie Ash all had 30+ disposals.
