It's been a disappointing season overall for Fernandez and she risks ending the year outside the top 50.

Indeed, the Canadian has a title from Osaka and semi-final from Hong Kong to defend over the next month, so this is an important Asian swing.

However, those two tournaments did come during the recent North American hardcourt summer, with Fernandez making the R16 in Toronto and third round at the US Open, going down to Naomi Osaka and Jessica Pegula respectively.

It wasn't all smooth sailing in her Singapore opener, but Fernandez won the crucial points to move past qualifier Kyoka Okamura 6-2 6-3 in two hours and nine minutes.

It was a disappointing home slam for Parks as she went out in the first round of the US Open to Aussie wildcard Taylah Preston in straight sets.

The 25-year-old bounced back with a 6-4 6-3 first round Singapore Open win over lucky loser Mei Yamaguchi. It was an improvement from last year in Singapore, where Parks lost in Round 1 to Maya Joint in three sets.
