Western United vs Sydney FC Tips & Predictions
It's an all A-League clash in the Australia Cup R32 as Western United welcome Sydney FC to IronBark Fields on Tuesday night.

Western will be hoping for a deep Australia Cup run this season having never advanced beyond the quarter-finals of this competition, while Sydney will be hoping to put a disappointing season behind them and get off to a winning start here. Both teams suffered early exits from the Australia Cup last year, with Western going out in the preliminary rounds and Sydney falling in the R32 to NPL side Oakleigh Cannons.
It's always tough to call these early-season fixtures involving A-League clubs, but Western look the value bet at home here. Western are unbeaten in the last three meetings between the teams, including winning the last two by 4-3 and 1-0 scores. With home ground advantage at IronBark Fields, I'm backing Western in the double chance market and as $3.75 outsiders.
Head To Head
As mentioned, Western have won two of the last three meetings between the teams - including a most-recent 1-0 triumph at this venue in Round 28 of the A-League, with Matthew Grimaldi's goal in the fourth minute proving the difference.
Western United Form
It was a great season for Western in the A-League as they finished in third spot on the ladder, scoring the second-most goals out of any side in the competition.
However, Western would have been disappointed with an opening elimination in the finals, going down over two legs against Melbourne City, who of course went on to win the Grand Final.
John Aloisi has signed on and committed his future to Western, who have seen some key players depart in the off-season, including Noah Botic and Michael Ruhs.
Western have already advanced further in this year's edition of the Australia Cup after falling 4-1 to the Newcastle Jets in the preliminary rounds in 2024.
Sydney FC Form
It was a hugely disappointing season for Sydney last term - they failed to win their final two games of the A-League season, which ultimately cost them a spot in the finals.
Sydney also blew a fantastic opportunity to play an Asian Champions League 2 final at home, suffering a semi-final elimination at the hands of Singapore side Lion City.
The Sky Blues have the advantage of match practice ahead of this Australia Cup showdown after beating English Championship side Wrexham in a friendly two weeks ago.
Ufuk Talay's side have made some decent signings so far this off-season, luring Paul Okon-Engstler to the club from Benfica, along with Al Hassan Toure.
Sydney have enjoyed success in the Australia Cup, winning the trophy in 2017 and 2023, along with runner-up appearances in 2016 and 2018 - however, they were stunned by Oakleigh Cannons in the R32 last year.
Verdict
Western look good value as home underdogs against a Sydney side that failed to make the A-League finals last term.
