Newcastle Jets vs Adelaide United Tips & Predictions - Cup specialists Adelaide to progress
The Australia Cup R32 features an A-League face-off between Newcastle Jets and Adelaide United at Maitland. Adelaide is favored due to their notable history in the Cup, having won three times. The Jets, though enjoying a decent finishing streak in the last A-League season, will face a tough battle, especially with management changes. Adelaide's form dipped towards the end of the last season, yet their returning star, Craig Goodwin, offers hope. With new managers for both teams, the match promises thrilling uncertainty.

Newcastle Jets vs Adelaide United Tips & Predictions
It's another all A-League showdown in the Australia Cup R32 as the Newcastle Jets welcome Adelaide United to Maitland Regional Sportsground on Wednesday night.

Adelaide start as the favourites in this clash and it's easy to see why - they are the only club to have won the Australia Cup on three occasions, doing so in 2014 before back-to-back triumphs in 2018-19. By contrast, the Jets have traditionally struggled in this competition, losing in the R32 in six of their nine previous appearances, while they've only ever made one quarter-final - and that resulted in a 1-0 loss to none other than Adelaide in 2019.
Both teams endured disappointing most-recent A-League seasons, and while the Jets have home ground advantage in Maitland, I can't ignore Adelaide's history in this competition and the recent head to head. Backing the Reds to emerge triumphant, with both teams finding the back of the net.
Head To Head
Adelaide have won nine of the last 11 meetings between the teams in all competitions, but the Jets did come away with a 2-1 victory in their most-recent clash in Round 19 of last season, with Lachie Rose and Clayton Taylor bagging the goals.
Newcastle Jets Form
The Jets finished the last A-League season in eighth spot on the ladder, despite an encouraging latter part of the campaign that saw them go on a seven-game unbeaten run.
However, Rob Stanton didn't feel like the club was providing him with the resources needed to build a successful club, so he departed at season's end and former Socceroo Mark Milligan has arrived as the new head coach.
There's plenty of positives for Milligan to work with coming into the new season, with a front three of Lachie Rose, Kota Mizunuma and new signing Max Burgess having strong potential, while the signing of former Dundee centre back Joe Shaughnessy should bolster the defence.
Newcastle made a run to the R16 of the Australia Cup last year, beating Rockdale 2-1 before going down 4-3 to eventual champions Macarthur FC.
Adelaide United Form
Adelaide somehow scraped into the A-League finals series last season, despite winning just one of their last 11 games.
The Reds were bundled out at the first hurdle by Western United and that was that. Overall, it was a poor season after an encouraging start and new manager Airton Andrioli will have his work cut out to produce some immediate improvement.
In a huge boost for the club, Craig Goodwin has returned and could feature in this encounter. The Socceroos winger is the all-time leading goalscorer for Adelaide and has made a total of 168 appearances for the club.
Adelaide are three-time Australia Cup champions and advanced to the semi-finals last season, beating NPL sides Blacktown City and Olympic Kingsway by 3-2 scores before a 2-1 extra-time triumph over the Western Sydney Wanderers. The Reds were eventually defeated 1-0 by Melbourne Victory in the final four.
Verdict
Tough game to call with a lot of uncertainty surrounding both clubs heading into the new season with new managers.
Adelaide have been a proven force in the Australia Cup and the Jets have struggled, so will back the Reds to come away with the win.
