Western Sydney Wanderers face a challenging road match against Heidelberg United at Olympic Park in the Australia Cup R16. Historically strong in Cup competitions, Heidelberg poses a significant threat, especially with their robust form in the NPL Victoria. The Wanderers, yet to reach the Cup finals, are highly motivated after a 3-0 win over Peninsula Power. Expect a competitive match, with predictions favoring WSW to advance, as both teams are likely to score. Whether Heidelberg will pull off another 'Cupset' remains to be seen.

Heidelberg United vs Western Sydney Wanderers Tips & Predictions

Western Sydney Wanderers have a tough assignment ahead of them to make the Australia Cup quarter-finals when they go on the road to face Heidelberg United on Tuesday night at Olympic Park.

The Wanderers have never made the final of the Australia Cup and they have received a tough draw to break that barrier in 2025. If the Wanderers make it past Heidelberg, which is far from ensured, then they would meet Wellington Phoenix in the quarter-finals and likely one of either Auckland FC or Sydney FC in the semis. Western Sydney were victorious 3-0 over Peninsula Power in their R32 game, while Heidelberg are no strangers to 'Cupsets' and deep Australia Cup runs over the years.

Indeed, Heidelberg have made the quarter-finals on four occasions, while they also shocked Sydney FC in the R32 last year. Heidelberg are one of the strongest NPL sides in the competition and at home, they will fancy their chances. However, you have to side with the Wanderers at this stage of the competition, so backing the visitors with both teams finding the back of the net.

Head To Head

This will be the first meeting between the two teams.

Heidelberg United Form

Heidelberg are currently second in the NPL Victoria, winning 17 of their 24 games for the season, while they also have the best defence in the league, conceding just 22 goals.

However, Heidelberg did suffer a defeat in their most-recent game, going down 2-1 to Avondale FC last week, which followed a 1-1 draw with South Melbourne.

Heidelberg were comfortable 2-0 winners in their Australia Cup R32 clash with the Western Bears, with Asahi Yokokawa opening the scoring midway through the first half before Max Bisetto secured the win in the second.

Heidelberg will now be aiming to advance one round further than last year, where they beat Sydney FC 3-1 before falling in extra-time to Victorian rivals Oakleigh Cannons.

Western Sydney Wanderers Form

It was a solid A-League season for the Wanderers, but they were bundled out of the finals at the first hurdle by Melbourne Victory.

Playing their first competitive game of the new campaign, the Wanderers were untroubled in a 3-0 triumph over Peninsula Power in the Australia Cup R32.

Bozhidar Kraev played a starring role in his competitive debut for the Wanderers, netting a first-half brace, while Kosta Barbarouses added a third to seal the victory.

The Wanderers have played one game since that victory, losing 1-0 in a friendly to Indonesian side Persib.

Verdict

Heidelberg will be tough to beat at home and they are no strangers to troubling A-League sides in this competition.

However, the Wanderers have never had much success in this competition and will sense an opportunity here. Backing WSW to get the job done, with both teams scoring as the best bet.
