Avondale FC or Brisbane City will reach a first ever Australia Cup semi-final when the two teams square off at Green Gully Reserve on Wednesday night.

Avondale and Brisbane City both share deep Italian roots and a storied history within Australian football - and one of these teams is set to break new ground and advance into the semi-finals of the national cup competition for the first time. Avondale are flying high at the top of the NPL Victoria and come into this clash on the back of five consecutive victories - including notable scalps over South Melbourne and Heidelberg United, while it's not been a great season for Brisbane City in the NPL Queensland, with the team languishing in seventh spot on the ladder after 20 games.

Playing at home, Avondale have the clear advantage here. They are the superior side and have been beating better teams than Brisbane lately. However, 10 of their last 12 games in all competitions have seen both teams find the back of the net, so Brisbane can score in defeat.

It's been a brilliant season for Avondale, who are leading the NPL Victoria and enjoying a great run in the Australia Cup, which could lead into a home semi-final against either Newcastle Jets or Macarthur FC.

Avondale are leading Heidelberg. by two points at the top of NPL Victoria, winning 18 of their 25 games and scoring a competition-high 64 goals in the process. They are coming off a 5-0 thrashing of South Melbourne on the weekend.

It's been smooth sailing for Avondale in the Australia Cup, although they have obviously benefitted from not facing an A-League side. Avondale began their campaign with a 5-1 demolition of Stirling Macedonia in the R32 before a 3-1 triumph over Apia Leichhardt, who had earlier knocked out A-League champions Melbourne City.

Brisbane City Form

Brisbane City are currently seventh in the NPL Queensland, winning eight of their 20 games and suffering nine defeats.

However, Brisbane. have turned a corner in recent times and head into this contest having won five of their last six games in all competitions.

Brisbane prevailed 2-1 over Olympic FC in a big derby showdown in the Australia Cup R32 and advanced into the quarter-finals by edging out Olympic Kingsway on penalties - the WA NPL side who had eliminated Melbourne Victory in the previous round.

City's most recent outing resulted in a 1-0 defeat to third-placed Peninsula Power on the weekend.
