In the NRL 2026 Round 8 face-off, the Canterbury Bulldogs are poised to take advantage of the Brisbane Broncos' weakened forward pack, missing key players such as Payne Haas, Pat Carrigan, and Corey Jensen. While Brisbane has shown resilience this season, they may struggle against the Bulldogs who are expected to dominate the middle field, with Jacob Preston likely making impactful plays. Expect a low-scoring game, emphasizing the Bulldogs' strategic control and potential to cover the 4.5-point spread.

Brisbane Broncos vs Canterbury Bulldogs, Round 8 2026 - Expert Prediction

Canterbury will have the edge here, with Brisbane’s depleted pack setting this game up in their favour as they cover the 4.5 points as the favourite on Anzac Eve.
The Broncos are heading into this one seriously undermanned through the middle, missing Payne Haas, Pat Carrigan and Corey Jensen and that’s a huge concern against a Bulldogs side that thrives on winning the forward battle. Even last week in their victory over the Tigers, Brisbane were outclassed in the middle but managed to scrap for the win. This time around, that lack of size and experience up front is likely to show, especially against a Canterbury pack that can generate pressure and control possession.

With that in mind, Canterbury -4.5 makes plenty of sense. If they get on top early through the middle, they should be able to dictate field position and keep Brisbane on the back foot, the test for the Bulldogs will be converting the field position.

The under 49.5 also lines up nicely. Both teams have been trending towards lower-scoring games. Canterbury’s attack has had major problems but should have enough territory to break through, while starving Brisbane of chances.

Jacob Preston will be licking his lips, running at a tired and inexperienced middle and has already had success against the Broncos in previous matchups.

  • Brisbane will be missing Payne Haas, Pat Carrigan and Corey Jensen this match.
  • 4 of 6 Canterbury matches have gone under the game total.
  • 4 of the last 5 Brisbane matches have gone under the game total
  • Jacob Preston has 2 tries in 4 games against Brisbane

Head to Head

Brisbane won both matches against the Bulldogs in 2025, including a commanding 42-18 victory on Anzac Eve last season, followed by a tighter 22-18 affair in Round 18.

The Broncos have won 8 of the last 10 matches against the Bulldogs.

4 of the last 5 matches have gone over the game total.

Brisbane Broncos Form Analysis

Brisbane are quietly building a strong season at 4–3, grinding out results even when undermanned and not at their best. A tight 21–20 victory over the Tigers  highlighted both their resilience and areas for concern. Despite being outplayed in key areas like possession, run metres and territory, the Broncos found a way to close the game through experience, with Adam Reynolds’ field goal sealing it late.

Across their last five, Brisbane have been consistently competitive, averaging around 24 points scored while conceding under 19 . Their ability to absorb pressure and still win is a major strength, driven by a powerful forward pack generating strong post-contact metres, however that will take a significant hit with the long-term injury to Payne Haas.

Defensive lapses and periods of poor control remain an issue, particularly when they lose the middle battle.

Canterbury Bulldogs Form Analysis

Canterbury enter this matchup with a 3–3 record and come off a disappointing 38–20 loss to Parramatta, a result that exposed some inconsistency in their game.

Despite holding their own in possession, they failed to create enough opportunities due to too many errors and defensive lapses proved costly, allowing the Eels to capitalise and pull away. Injuries, including a concern for Jacob Kiraz, may also impact their depth heading into this clash.

The Bulldogs have been inconsistent across their last five, alternating wins and losses while averaging just over 21 points and conceding 24 . Their strength lies in effort areas like tackling and work rate, but they can struggle against teams that generate strong yardage and dominate the middle.

While capable of competing, particularly when they control possession, Canterbury’s inability to create real attacking opportunities remains a key concern against stronger opposition.
