Gawler Value Bet - Race 1 No. 6 Violet Lovebug

Violet Lovebug showed good form last season, debuting with a strong 1050m win at Balaklava in June.

She backed that up with a convincing two-length success in a Class 1 on a Soft 6 surface, with both subsequent efforts also coming on rain-affected ground.

Racing on the speed on debut, she again showed tactical versatility when leading at Gawler next start before being overhauled late stepping up to 1200m.

That run came on a Soft 7, where only subsequent metro winner Bootlegger proved too strong, with the pair finishing almost six lengths clear of the remainder.

Travis Doudle’s filly was ridden quieter when tested in Group 3 company at her final two-year-old outing, and now dropping in grade with two trials under her belt and a favourable draw, she looks value to resume with a win.

Gawler Arms Hotel Maiden Plate Tips (Race 4)

Gawler Next Best Bet - Race 4 No. 11 Gazelle

Gazelle has been ultra-consistent to date, recording four top-four finishes from as many runs.

She performed well when jumping from an inside gate to finish third at Penola in October before a solid fourth at Naracoorte.

While beaten more than five lengths there, the run still rated sound for an 1100m maiden on a Good 4 surface.

Two subsequent efforts on good tracks have both been encouraging, including a narrow second when rising to 1350m at Strathalbyn.

She backed that up with another strong showing at Mount Gambier when beaten less than half-a-length over 1300m after travelling well and sweeping wide into the race.

A daughter of Wandjina, she looks ready for 1500m and appeals as a filly capable of breaking through for her maiden win.

Irongate Australia Handicap Tips (Race 5)

Gawler Roughie - Race 5 No. 9 Nicajon

Nicajon returned to the winner’s stall in October when scoring on a wet track at Warrnambool over 1400m at Benchmark 62 level.

He followed that with two third-place finishes from his next three runs, including back at Warrnambool in a Benchmark 66 over the same trip.

The son of Clangalang now crosses the border for the first time this preparation, having placed in metro company at Morphettville last campaign.

Forecast rain enhances his prospects, and he has drawn wide successfully in the past.

While the veteran isn’t getting any younger, he has placed third in all three previous starts at this venue, and racing with a light weight up in class gives him a genuine knockout hope.

Cranes Services Handicap Tips (Race 8)

Gawler Best Bet - Race 8 No. 3 Flaming Navy

Flaming Navy broke through for his first win this preparation with a dominant performance in a Balaklava Class 1 in October.

He put more than six lengths on his rivals that day when tackling 1600m for just the second time.

Caitlin Tootell, who rode him to that victory, sticks aboard after partnering him to a respectable sixth at Morphettville next start, where he pulled up lame in an 1800m Benchmark 68.

That form has since stood up, with both the winner and ninth placing winning next time out.

The New Zealand-bred gelding arrives here off a strong runner-up effort over 1800m at Morphettville three weeks ago on his first attempt on wet ground.

Despite a wide alley, he has shown enough tactical speed to offset the draw, and he looks well placed to go one better.
