Pakenham takes centre stage on Saturday with its standalone meeting, headlined by the Pakenham Cup and the Supernova on a strong late-season program.

With solid depth across the middle and back end of the card, punters get a mix of emerging types and established performers, and the spacious track should ensure genuine tempo and fair racing throughout.

Pakenham Tips December 13

Hallam Truck Centre Leila Rose Handicap Tips (Race 5)

Pakenham Value Bet - Race 5 No. 2 Jenni’s Meadow

Jenni’s Meadow is one that can improve third-up now dropping in grade after labouring slightly in a fast-run event won by Sabaj second-up on November 8.

The Caulfield return the previous month was sound, producing the second-fastest last 200m of that race, and she now steps to 2000m.

It’s worth noting her only third-up runs in her three-year-old season resulted in Group placings over this distance, and she was only a few strides off winning both, with the latest coming in the Group 2 Roses at Doomben in May before an even performance in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks a fortnight later.

A Listed win at the back end of her two-year-old season further highlights her ability.

With Luke Cartwright’s 2kg claim providing welcome relief and a return to firmer ground another positive, the daughter of Brutal can run a race at each-way odds.

Evergreen Turf David Bourke Memorial Tips (Race 6)

Pakenham Favourite - Race 6 No. 12 Madiyya

Madiyya is superbly bred, being a half-sister to dual Group 1 winner Grunt and Group 2 winner Zayydani.

She showed ample talent in her first campaign, where only a wide draw on debut prevented a four-peat, with that slashing Pakenham second followed by a winning hat-trick.

The rise to 1600m second-up looks ideal after what was effectively a barrier-trial style run on Cranbourne Cup Day, when eased early and allowed to work through her gears late over 1300m.

She drops sharply in the weights here, and although this is technically a rise in grade, she still profiles as the most progressive galloper in the field.

With wide draws not a huge knock on this big track — especially this season — Madiyya remains a major winning chance.

Ladbrokes Pakenham Cup Tips (Race 7)

Pakenham Feature Bet - Race 7 No. 16 Skippers Canyon

Skippers Canyon must be testing the patience of connections, as he clearly has talent but continues to give away lengths at the start.

He overcame that issue to score stylishly first-up at Caulfield last month when landing the cash for us at a good price, though the habit proved costly second-up.

Even so, the November 29 performance still held merit late, and he now rises sharply to 2500m for local trainer Phillip Stokes.

This looks a fair edition of the Pakenham Cup with numerous seasoned stayers, yet he may be the horse on the way up while many of his rivals are fully exposed.

A tricky race, but this OTI galloper deserves respect.

Ladbrokes Supernova Tips (Race 8)

Pakenham Next Best Bet - Race 8 No. 3 Private Eye

It’s a great coup to have Private Eye lining up in the Supernova.

The gelding has been in work since his Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap return in June, with a spaced-out campaign that saw him resume a month later to win the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield.

A freshen-up preceded his latest Melbourne victory, and 1400m now appears the trip that suits him best.

He returns to that distance after dropping to 1300m for the Russell Balding, where he clashed with the very smart Jimmysstar.

While a few progressive runners are engaged, this seasoned topliner is still the obvious starting point and looks very hard to beat under these conditions.

John Duff & Co Vobis Gold Bullion Tips (Race 9)

Pakenham Best Bet - Race 9 No. 7 Persian Spirit

Persian Spirit is absolutely flying, and the long-odds return win proved no fluke.

He has continued trending upward, highlighted by a dominant 1400m victory at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day.

A key point from that performance is the margin he put on third-placed Ndola, who sits on the second line of betting here and provides a very clear form reference.

A slashing second at Listed level a fortnight ago at Caulfield confirmed he has held his peak.

This is superb placement by the Simon Wilde team, and he should be very hard to beat in the penultimate.
