Doomben Tips May 24

Race 1 - 11:43AM Sky Racing BM85 Handicap Tips (1110m)

Best: 13. Sicilian. Now third-up from a long break, Sicilian can give a sight down in the weights at an each-way price.

She's placed in both runs for Tony Gollan and after looking gone at the 100m, the mare stuck on fairly last start.

There has been some Group references come from that April 26 event and Sicilian will only strip fitter third-up.
Value: 3. National Choice. 1000m was too sharp on May 3, but first-up from a lengthy layoff, it was an encouraging effort.

National Choice was strong past the line via that Sunshine Coast outing (fastest last 400m and 200m of the race).

Nash Rawiller jumping on is a plus and National Choice has never been far away since joining Robert Heathcote.

Race 2 - 12:18PM The Star BM85 Handicap Tips (1350m)

Best: 13. Tavs. He's been in great form for the new yard, with three wins and two placings in six starts for Mark Currie.

Tavs is well placed staying in a BM85 after his third-up romp at Eagle Farm (second-fastest last 200m of the card).

I'm not worried about the weight rise, but the map from a wide alley is an obvious concern in the hat-trick bid.

Value: 8. Cranky Harry. There could be nice race for him later in carnival, albeit 1350m is a good starting point.

Cranky Harry has some class and he progressed last prep, with a stakes placing before contesting the Big Dance.

With no prior first-up wins, Crank Harry is big odds here, but his lead-up work suggests he's forward enough.

Race 3 - 12:53PM Drinkwise Bill Carter Stakes Tips (1350m)

Best: 1. Sunrays. Trainer Kelly Schweida has some handy youngsters and he's aiming for his third win in this race.

Schweida prepares Sunrays, a two-year-old who went three-from-three in her first prep over January and February.

Beadman bolted in with the Ken Russell, but Sunrays still finished off first-up and she's now back against her own sex.

Value: 10. Smexy. Over 1000m, Smexy lacked the turn-of-foot vs Sisstainable, however, it was it still a nice debut.

That stakes-placed winner had race experience and a fitness edge, while this filly was well-supported at a price.

A big, strong daughter of Pierata, Smexy should relish the rise in trip and there's natural improvement to come.

Race 4 - 1:28PM Ladbrokes Chief De Beers Tips (1110m)

Best: 7. Appin Girl. She overcame trouble when saluting on return last prep and Appin Girl has won a recent trial.

The four-year-old is down on the 53kg minimum for this fresh outing, where she gets weight off some key threats.

All of her wins have come either first or second-up and vs exposed opposition, Appin Girl is well placed.
Value: 5. Nettuno. The wide alley isn't ideal, however, Nettuno is still building towards a second black-type win.

He's was in the inferior going fresh when recording the second-fastest last 400m of the April 19 card at Eagle Farm.

Second-up at Ipswich, he was doing his best work late (fastest last 800m/600m and 400m of the meeting).

Race 5 - 2:03PM Seven Darby Mccarthy OAM QTIS 3yo Tips (1110m)

Best: 14. She Ours. At big odds is She Ours, a filly who has been competitive in both black-type appearances to date.

The three-year-old was equal-fav in the Listed Gold Edition and she was spelled after that December 14 run.

The May 10 return at Ipswich was effectively a trial and with the extra trip suiting second-up, she has some claims.

Value: 2. Lead Me On. He's returning off a 12-month break, so the market may be the best guide with Lead Me On.

The gelding showed promise early, with a slick debut win prior to a second as an odds-on fav to a smart El Morzillo.

There was a setback, as he trialled in spring before going out, but he was a two-length heat winner on May 8.

Race 6 - 2:38PM Magic Millions Fillies & Mares Mile Tips (1600m)

Best: 13. Torabella. There were excuses first-up, where Torabella covered ground and she tired late as a result.

She then failed when in the market for a Listed race and that last run can be forgiven (didn't handle a heavy track).

Before this prep, Torabella had won five of her last six outings, which includes a hat-trick to finish her summer.

Value: 2. Pulchritudinous. As a 30/1 chance and with no prior first-up wins, nothing was expected fresh on April 1.

The 2024 New Zealand Oaks winner wasn't disgraced in that Group 2 and she subsequently won a Sydney trial.

Pulchritudinous comfortably accounted for Mayfair in that May 9 hit-out and she moved well throughout the heat.

Race 7 - 3:17PM ANZ Bloodstock News The Roses Tips (2000m)

Best: 1. Benagil. The Queensland Oaks is the aim and a result, it'll be interesting to see what the market does late.

Benagil arrives off a stylish Australasian Oaks win and she stays at 2000m for The Roses (is this her right trip?).

She's the clear class runner on paper, having saluted either side of a second to the very smart Treasurethe Moment.
Value: 4. Churchill's Choice. She was won all three starts in her first prep and the filly was unlucky in her April return.

Churchill's Choice was one run short second-up in the Queensland Guineas, but it was a nice lead-up for this.

I'm also including Dame Commander at decent odds, who landed the cash for us second-up and 2000m is ideal.

Race 8 - 3:57PM XXXX Doomben Cup Tips (2000m)

Best: 1. Antino. Heavy tracks can exaggerate beaten margins, however, the main query with Antino heading into the Hollidale Stakes was the testing Gold Coast surface.

Following a Group 1 demolition in last year's Toorak Handicap, Antino split Australia's two best milers at WFA level before contesting the Hong Kong Mile.

His Hong Kong effort was inconclusive, as he was badly checked at a key stage of that Sha Tin feature and he arrives to this third-up attempt with confidence.

Next Best: 3. Fawkner Park. All eight of his wins have come on good ground and with the Gold Coast track deteriorating a fortnight ago, the late market drift for Fawkner Park was no shock.

While he was well-held behind Antino, the six-year-old outperformed expectations in testing conditions and he arguably should've won this race last year.

Prior to his Queen Elizabeth Stakes performance, Fawkner Park recorded the fastest last 200m of both the Verry Elleegant Stakes and Ranvet Stakes.

Value: 9. Osipenko. The Chris Waller-trained galloper was spelled after breaking a long drought in January and All Aged Stakes return had merit (third-fastest closing sectionals of the race).

Osipenko then ran into a hard-fit wet-tracker in Punch Lane when runner-up in the Hawkesbury Cup and that 1600m effort should top him off nicely.

The son of Pierro has an advantage in being three weeks between runs vs key threats who are here a fortnight after slogging it out at the Gold Coast.

Race 9 - 4:30PM HKJC World Pool BRC Sprint Tips (1350m)

Best: 11. War Machine. It's a cracking race to end Doomben Cup Day, with a strong field assembled for this Group 3.

War Machine needs to a win to guarantee a Stradbroke slot and we'll get a guide to his ceiling in this outing.

Before his second-up win, he just missed an in-form sprinter on Mornington Cup Day (fastest last 400m and 200m of the card).
Value: 15. Xidaki. At bolters odds, there has been early money for Xidaki, who is well placed at 1350m third-up.

He has no first or second-up wins, which adds further merit to his autumn performances in New South Wales.

Xidaki progressed over his three-year-old season and last winter culminated with a Group 3 win in Queensland.
