Caulfield Best Bet - Race 2 No. 13 Simurgh

We were with Simurgh at an each-way quote via his Australian debut at Pakenham and, while he had to settle for second in that April 23 outing, it was hard to miss the run of the Hayes-trained import.

The gelding saluted over this journey in Ireland at his third start before being sold to Australia.

In a slowly run affair over 1600m, a trip short of his best, the four-year-old settled back before charging home late as runner-up.

He recorded the fastest final 200m of the entire Pakenham card in the process, which was particularly impressive for a mile race.

Simurgh looks ideally placed rising in distance and the import also carries 4kg less here.

Lamaro's Hotel Handicap Tips (Race 4)

Caulfield Value Bet - Race 4 No. 10 Alzaro

Although she was no match for the very smart Olivanaotherday, the 1200m resumption on the Caulfield Heath track was a good one from Alzaro.

While the two subsequent efforts have both been competitive, the filly has hit flat spots in each April performance and remaining at 1200m has worked against her on both occasions.

The latest came when dropping in grade for a Pakenham Class 1, where she finished runner-up as favourite.

Alzaro rises back in grade here, albeit against her own age and sex in a field that lacks standouts.

It shapes as D-Day for the filly but, now hard-fit and out to what looks a much more suitable trip under the 54kg minimum, she gets another chance at an each-way quote.

Caulfield Favourite - Race 6 No. 1 Bustling

The most intriguing runner on the entire program is Bustling, a galloper we have not seen since his failed effort when in the market for the Group 2 Run To The Rose in September 2024.

The gelding was purchased from the west after building a strong Perth record that included three dominant stakes victories.

Even in a modest field, it would not surprise to see the market take him on late, given he resumes after a long absence with 62kg on what could be soft ground.

However, there was little to fault in his recent jump-out work, where he finished third in a strong heat before producing a more searching effort to win his latest.

That was exactly what you wanted to see from Bustling heading back to the races.

Caulfield Next Best Bet - Race 7 No. 5 Brave One

The main query with Brave One is the track if the rail remains off as it has been recently at Caulfield, with the gelding drawing barrier one.

However, he does possess tactical speed to use the gate and potentially tag the leaders if they begin to fan.

Brave One was not disgraced when resuming at Group 3 level at Randwick despite finishing back in the field on a track pattern that did not suit.

This is a much more suitable assignment and the gelding worked through the grades nicely last year, which included back-to-back winter victories.

Last campaign, Brave One also recorded a second-up Newcastle win in a handy affair before placing at Listed level.

Caulfield Roughie - Race 9 No. 1 Royal Lass

There was more depth to the midweek BM74 contested by Royal Lass first-up at Sandown, where the mare was never in contention over 1000m after being run off her feet early.

It was still more than a pass mark from Royal Lass, who is being kept on the fresh side for this BM78 against her own sex.

There was not much to fault throughout her last campaign, where the highlight came at Moonee Valley at a big price when leading throughout in a decent edition of the Country Cup Final.

Royal Lass has also won her last two second-up attempts.

Back to 1200m, the mare can settle into a more comfortable rhythm closer to the speed here under Ryan Houston, who takes 2kg off with his claim.
